COFFIN Charity (Coats) (Mrs. Stephen Coffin)
daughter of John and Sarah Coats, was born December 18, 1813, died September 2, 1890, aged 76 years, 10 months and 14 days. She was born near Covington, Ohio, but in early childhood her parents removed to Randolph county, and in this county she was married to Stephen Coffin in 1832, February 2, and to whom were born seventeen children, eight of whom survive her. She was left a widow in 1860, and after several years removed to Winchester, where at the time of her death she resided with her daughtr, Mrs. J. W. Pickett. She was reared under the influence of Friends and after the church was established here she joined and was always faithful in attendance and followed in her Master's footsteps in daily life, always ready to assist the suffering of unfortunate, especially she tried to teach children the importance of the commandment
"Honor thy Father and thy Mother," often saying parents did not often teach this observance as they should. During her last illness her Christian patience never wavered, and when the summons come very unexpectedly she was ready, saying,
"This is death" when her daughters cound not realise it, hoping she would be better soon, she said, "I am dalm, but I am dying." Then a radiant look on her face as if touched with a ray of glory from the opening gates of the Celestial City and a loving look in the faces of her weeping daughters closed her eyes to open them in the joy of a glad re-union on the other side. She left two brothers and one sister, while her descendants number 104, forty-nine grandchildren, thirty-seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. The funeral services were conducted by Bros. W. C. Brown and Wooten, and she was laid to rest by the side of her husband and children at White River.
One by one, the sheaves are garnered,
As the crown of victory's won,
One by one they leave us weeping,
Go to hear the Lord;s "Well done."
Oh we pray our gracious Father,
Till our heart's so full of Thee,
That with joy we shall greet her,
When we've crossed life's troubled sea.
