![]() The following obituaries were transcribed by Tamara Kincaide GEORGE L PARKER George L PARKER was born in Cincinnati OH Jan 9 1855 and died near Richland Nov 13 1929.His parents moved to Indiana when he was nine years old and settled on the LOUIS ROTH farm near Midway. He did not have the advantages of an education but being endowed with the unusual ability and by the practice of strict economy he made a success in the things of the world. He was married to Miss MARIE GOODMAN on Jan 9 1875 and to this union three children, two daughters and one son were born: Mrs. TILLIE HALSEY, MRS ELECT DIEKMAN and son ERNEST PARKER who burned to death at the age of three years old. His wife and companion died in 1898. He was married again Jan 9 1899 to Miss OLIVE ELY and to this union seven children were born three sons: GEORGE, PAUL and ERNEST, and four daughters VELVIA, DENORAH, ELSIE and INEZ PARKER. He was a charter member of Richland I.O.O.F. lodge, of the Rockport encampment and of the Knights of Pythias lodge at Lake Mill, and until his health broke he was a director at the Lake State Bank. He never united in any church but believed in the teachings of the Christian Church and contributed to its support. While a young man he bought a large tract of land near Liberty Schoolhouse and by good management succeeded in paying for it and by industry he cleared the land and made it one of the finest and most productive farms in the community. He had been invalid for several years much of the time confined to his room and no doubt when the call came he welcomed the messenger. A good citizen, neighbor and father has gone. Rockport Journal Nov 29 1929 THEODORE HALL THEODORE HALL, one of Rockport's most honored citizens, passed away at his home on Fourth street Wednesday at 11 o'clock in the morning. Mr. HALL was born in Rising Sun, Indiana on Oct. 24,1836,lived at Lake Mill Midway and for the past few years has made this city his home. He was married three times, first to MINERVA HARKER, second to MARY E. PINEL, and later to MRS E C GRAHAM. Three children FRANK, ALLEN and JENNIE were born to the first union, and three to the second, two of whom died in infancy, THEODORE JR surviving. MR HALL was of sterling qualities and for many years was a faithful member of the Christian Church of which he was an elder when death came. The funeral service will be conducted by ELDER L.N. VARBLE at the Christian Church Friday at 10 o'clock after which the remains will be laid to rest in Mt. Zion Cemetery. He leaves a companion, four children and a host of friends and relatives in sadness. At the ripe age of 75 years 2 months 16 days, a life with few faults and many virtues bids us adieu to enter that home not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. Rockport Journal Jan 12 1912. NANCY SAMANTHA ANN MEDCALF NANCY SAMANTHA ANN MEDCALF died in Dale, Spencer County, Indiana Jan 25 1862 of flux. Little NANCY SAMANTHA ANN, infant daughter of AMANDA and ALLEN MEDCALF,aged 1 year 10 months and 4 days, was a child much loved by her parents, little brothers and sisters, and was admired by all that knew her. He who would have loved her on earth has taken her to dwell with the Holy Angels where sorrow and death never enter. CYRUS MEDCALF CYRUS A. B. MEDCALF died after a lingering illness of seven weeks, CYRUS MEDCALF, infant son of ALLEN and AMANDA MEDCALF born Apr 17 1864 died July 13 1866 aged 2 yrs 2 months and 29 days. Oh death, what has thou done? Life's feeble thread is broken causing many hearts to ache and eyes to weep. But thank God through Christ thou not break the bonds of love that bound our child to our hearts. MRS FANNIE HAINES MRS FANNIE HAINES, wife of JOHN C HAINES died at their home in Richland City Monday, Apr 18 at 7:30 pm after a illness of a number of years, aged 60 yrs three months 24 days.Funeral services will be conducted this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the M E Church at Richland by the REVS S O DORSEY and J T JACOBS, the interment will be at Mt Zion. Chrisney Sun April 21 1910. AMANDA WOOD MEDCALF AMANDA WOOD MEDCALF was born in Spencer County, Ind. Sept 10, 1830. She was married to ALLEN MEDCALF Sept. 14, 1848 and to this union was born 10 children, only three of whom are now living: MIZELLA JANE, WM, and GEORGE E. of Celinda, TX with whom she has made her home from Spencer County in 1882.She died Feb 11 1914 at Celina TX. She had been a widow for 46 yrs and has been a member of the Presbyterian Church since 1846.She was a true and faithful Christian and loved by all who knew her. She leaves 24 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. She was laid to rest in Cottage Hill Cemetery some five miles west of Celinda TX. WALTER HAYFORD WALTER HAYFORD, 56, of Richland was instantly killed Monday night when he fell from the hayloft of his barn as he was trying to close the door of a hay chute to keep out the rain. He evidently fell upon his head as it was crushed into his chest and the collarbone was broken. He is survived by the widow, two brothers, a sister, two daughters, and a son. Monitor Aug 20 1931 JESSE JONES JESSE JONES, an innocent man was hung in Arkansas Nov 15 1895 on a charge of murdering the two HIBDON boys, One of the HIBDON boys was found in territorial prison a few days ago. JONES was hung on circumstantial evidence and but very few people thought him guilty. Dale Reporter Apr 23 1897 EARL J HOBSON The remains of EARL J HOBSON age 27 yrs who died in France Dec. 11, 1918 arrived in Boonville Saturday night and were taken to the home of his mother MRS WILLIAM RUSTON of east Poplar Street. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at the home, DR C. C. EDWARDS of the M E Church officiating. The body was taken to Chrisney for burial Monday morning at Highland Cemetery. Mr. HOBSON is survived by his mother, four brothers: CLEM, WM, WALTER and ARLY; also one sister, MRS EDWARD INGRAM. The firing squad color bearers and color guard of the American Legion of this city accompanied the remains. Boonville Standard Jan 21 1921 SARAH BRADLEY SARAH A BRADLEY, daughter of JOSHUA STRODE, was born in Spencer County IND June 5, 1835 died Oct. 26, 1905 at the home of ALFRED HAMMOND in Grandview. Her husband THOMAS J BRADLEY, a soldier in the Mexican War, died Feb. 1898. To this union was born eight children, six of who are still living. She was buried at Hackleman Cemetery beside her husband. Rockport Journal Nov 3 1905. CHARLES WELDON On Monday May 26 about 6 o'clock CHARLES WELDON and ROBERT JONES his brother in law on a creek three miles west of Rockport near the farm of JAMES GREATHOUSE were struck by lightning. WELDON was instantly killed, JONES brother JONES heard his cry for help and rescued JONES. WELDON leaves a wife and one or two children. He was a painter by trade formerly lived in Boonville making preparations to move back to Boonville. Boonville Standard May 29 1879. JAMES WILLIAMSON On Tuesday the 8th of pneumonia, JAMES WILLIAMSON son of General S. D. WILLIAMSON, aged about 30 yrs. The remains of the deceased were interred in the Rockport Cemetery. Rockport Democrat. Mar 12 1864 ANDERSON TOMASON ANDERSON TOMASON aged 105 yrs died Sunday at Rockport, A slave for 75 years his first master was NELSON TOMASON of North Carolina. Boonville Standard May 17 1895 REV J W BUNNER Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock for the REV J W BUNNER, Civil war veteran at Newtonville M.E. Church, in charge of the REV ULMER of Centerville. Six ministers acted as pallbearers and a number of GAR members attended the funeral of their comrade. Burial was in New Hope cemetery. The Rev J W BUNNER was born June 13 1832 in Brown County OH. In early manhood he came with his parents to Spencer Co Ind. He was united in marriage to MARY FRANCIS LYMAN Sept 21 1865, five children were born to this union, CORTEZ, ANNA, GERTRUDE, WALTER and RUTH. His wife and CORTEZ as well as RUTH preceded him to the great beyond. On the evening of Aug 6 he met with an accident which resulted in his death at 3:30 a.m. Aug 17 1924 at the age of 92 yrs 2 months and 4 days. This period of intense suffering was born cheerfully and without complaint. As the end drew near with uplifted arms he exclaimed "Oh Lord, left me up". Brother Bunner's goal was perfect Christian citizenship. During his life he was known as the sower of good deeds, love, kindness, harmony and good will. Many personal friends and strangers as well have heard his testimony "I am at peace with all mankind". He gave to his children the greatest heritage "A Christian life " and to his community a great monument. We are left to mourn his departure will see the ingathering of the harvest of his sowing. He was a civil war veteran volunteering to serve his country during the rebellion. For three years he was a member of CO G 2ND IOWA CAV. ELIZABETH BOWEN Elizabeth the eldest daughter of ABNER and MARY KNOWLTON was born near Marietta OH Sept 19 1853 and departed this life Jan 19 1935 at the age of 81 years and four months. She was united in marriage to JOHN BOWEN who preceded her death several years ago. Surviving are four children, FRED BOWEN, MRS ANNA RASOR, MRS CORA LUCAS, MRS LOUISE BYRNE and 14 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. The funeral services were held in the home of her daughter Mrs. RASOR with REV E M MCCOY in charge. Burial was five miles west of Rockport. Chrisney Sun Jan 25 1935. A. WAYNE HEVRON A. WAYNE HEVRON aged 72 yrs died Thursday morning at 3:30 o'clock after a few days of the flu at his home near Lincoln City. The funeral will be held Friday at 2 o'clock at the home and the burial will be at Old Pigeon Cemetery. Mr. HEVRON is survived by his wife who is now quite ill, one daughter MISS BERTHA at home and three sons CLAUDE, WAYNE and JAMES, also one sister MRS W. T. CHINN and two brothers J. B. and ATLAS HEVRON. Mr. HEVRON is one of the best men in Spencer County. Rockport Democrat. Mar 24 1922 JOSEPHUS ELLIOTT The subject of this sketch died at his home in Dale early Friday morning after a very brief illness of pneumonia. MR ELLIOTT was born in Kentucky in 1849 and came to this place only a few years ago and has been engaged in farming since coming here. The deceased leaves a widow, two daughters, MRS WM MCCALLISTER of Harrisburg Illinois and MRS J A CHRISTIAN of Evansville, and one son ROBERT of Dale. Two brothers and one sister also survives him.MR ELLIOTT was a member of the Baptist Church, Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at the family residence by the REV D P MCCOY and interment taking place at the local cemetery. Dale Weekly Feb 18 1916. JULIA BANKS MRS JULIA BANKS, who died at the home of her son ALEX in Chicago Wednesday, will be buried in the Rockport Cemetery Friday. Afternoon services will be conducted by the REV R. R. BRYAN. Friends of the family are requested to assemble at HOING'S undertaking establishment where the remains will be taken from the train. Deceased was a resident of Rockport a good many years and her husband is buried here. Rockport Journal Feb 17 1906 JOHN F SMALL JOHN F SMALL, son of JOHN and ANNA HOWARD SMALL was born in Spencer county in November 1856 and died July 29 1940 being 83 years and 8 months at his death. Orphaned at a early age he made his home with relatives until he reached manhood. Mr. SMALL in his prime was an outstanding character in his community. His deep religious convictions and his great pride in his appearance and surroundings are remembered by all. He was united in marriage to GRACE SNYDER and to this union three children were born, JOHN, DAVID and WILLIAM later adopted and known as BILLY JOE CLEMENTS. MR SMALL spent 14 years in Arkansas after which broken by ill health he returned to Spencer county. Like Job of old, stricken with many afflictions he still kept his faith in an understanding God. Converted in his early youth and a member of Oak Grove Church until his death we feel that God has at last rewarded a good man who suffered much and welcomed the call of peace and rest. He leaves besides his immediate family a half brother OSCAR DEWITT, a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends and other relatives. Funeral services were conducted by REV O. W. ANDERSON at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Shiloh Methodist Church, Burial at the church cemetery. Rockport Democrat Aug 2 1940. RICHARD D GARRETT RICHARD DELBER GARRETT, God has been gathering his flowers again, so he sent the death angel to the home of RICHARD and MARTHA GARRETT and there selected a tiny rosebud, their baby son RICHARD who came to life with them Jan 29 1935 and passed away at daybreak Christmas morning Dec. 25 1936 aged 1 yr 10 months and 24 days. He leaves to mourn besides his devoted daddy and mother a half brother CHARLES, his grandmother GARRETT and grandparents MR and MRS GUY CRONIN, besides his uncles, aunts and other relatives. We cannot understand why one so sweet and precious should be snatched away so quickly. But those are the things we cannot answer. It is all in divine hands and we like to think that when the young are called that perhaps they are favored, perhaps to add a spot of beauty a needed flower in the heavenly garden, a blossom that will grow in greater beauty there. Rockport Journal Jan 1 1937. ARTHUR G BENNETT ARTHUR G BENNETT was born in Eureka Nov 29 1880 and departed this life Dec 31 1937 aged 57 yrs 1 months and 2 days. He was the youngest child and only son in a family of seven born to the late T J and MARTHA WHITE BENNETT. ARTHUR was the idol of his parents, his father was a well known Baptist minister and the young son was brought up in a religious atmosphere from which he never departed. He was educated in the common schools of Luce Township and later attended Franklin College. On Sept 1 1900 he was united in marriage to MISS MARY HALL and their entire married life was peacefully quietly and industriously spent on their farm near Eureka, walking hand in hand and sharing each other's joys and sorrows. He was a member of the Baptist Church at Eureka and lived his religion day by day. Surviving are his wife MARY, two sisters MRS LAURA JONES and MRS ALICE BENNETT, also a number of nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted at the AXTON funeral parlor Sunday afternoon burial was in Shiloh Cemetery. SGT. VERNARD BELL SGT. VERNARD BELL was born in Spencer County Nov 1 1928 and died Sept 7 1952 in Korea of wounds suffered. He was employed for some time as a truck driver for a poultry dealer at Lamar. He was a kind hearted young man and a lover of children. He leaves to mourn his death, his parents MR. and MRS. E. BELL of Lamar, five brothers : WALTER, HERCHEL, GILBERT, RAYMOND and CLIFFORD, one sister, MARY ROSE DOERSEM of Lamar, three uncles and a host of other relatives and friends. He like many others gave his all for his country and his loved ones. He can well be called a hero. Rockport Journal Nov 7 1952. GEORGE P. LUDWIG GEORGE P. LUDWIG 91 died at 4:30 pm Wednesday afternoon at his home one half mile north of Buffaloville. Surviving are his wife MARY ELIZABETH, three sons DR N. G., HARVEY and WESLEY, two daughters, MRS LYDIA FARMER and MRS ED PFENDER. Funeral services will be held 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Buffaloville Methodist Church with the REV A. O. BEENBLOSSOM in charge of the service. Burial will be in the Buffaloville Cemetery. Dale News Apr 10 1942 TOM LAMAR Uncle TOM LAMAR, after a lingering illness, died at his home near here Tuesday Oct. 6 thus ended the life of another of the pioneers of this community. He was buried Wednesday at the Conner graveyard, followed to his last resting place by a large concourse of sorrowing and sympathizing friends and relatives. The bereaved widow and children have the heart felt sympathies of all. Rockport Journal. Oct 16 1891 REV. J. E. BRANT The REV. J. E. BRANT a well known Methodist preacher who was pastor at M E Rockport Church three years 1870-73 died very suddenly of heart disease while sitting in a chair Monday Feb 29 1904 at the residence of his daughter MRS. G. S. ADAMS, at Bloomington. He was a veteran of the Civil war, participated in several important battles and spent six months at Libby prison. He retired from the active ministry several years ago. Rockport Journal. Mar 11 1904 JOSEPH GENTRY JOSEPH GENTRY aged 84 years a pioneer of Spencer County died Thursday last week at Lincoln City. He came from Kentucky in 1818 and settled near Gentryville where ABRAHAM LINCOLN lived. He was present at the burial of NANCY HANKS LINCOLN. For 60 years he lived in sight of the LINCOLN homestead. Boonville Standard June 5 1896. ELLEN GILES ELLEN, wife of GENTRY GILES, aged 45 years. Sister GILES was the mother of eight children, two of who preceded her to the spirit land, she leaves a husband and six children and a large circle of friends to mourn her loss, but their loss was her eternal gain. She has been a consistent member of the Baptist Church for 32 years. She was baptized by ELDER WM MCCONNEL and at the time of her death was a member of the Pleasant Valley Church. She was greatly beloved by all who knew her and shall miss her and her many acts of kindness. ALFRED LAMAR ALFRED LAMAR of this place aged 85 years, last Saturday his wife 84 years on Sunday. They had been married about 63 years. He was born near Grandview, long before Indiana was admitted to the union. Boonville Standard Nov 1 1895. ELLIS RAAF ELLIS RAAF eldest son of ex commissioner W H RAAF was kicked by a horse yesterday afternoon and died instantly. We are told the blow was given just above the heart. ELLIS was a young man of exemplary character and would have gone out at next selective call. The family have the sympathy of many friends. Grandview Monitor. Nov 15 1917 HENRY GRAY A shocking accident occurred last Friday morning just over the line in Spencer county, by which HENRY GRAY, son of WM GRAY, formerly of Skelton Township, lost his life. He was assisting his mother in milking an unruly cow that had run away 2 or 3 times, he mounted a horse and went after her, when his mother found him he was unable to speak and died Saturday morning. He was buried yesterday at the Phillips Cemetery. His mother and a young wife of whom he married but a short time could hardly bear his bereavement, His wife was a daughter of JESSE PEARCE. Boonville Standard May 1 1879. ANNA LEMMON MRS ANNA LEMMON of Rockport was found by her husband drowned in a cistern Tuesday afternoon. The covering of the cistern gave way under her weight and being alone in the house no one heard her give any alarm for rescue. She was the daughter of the late MORRIS SHARP, and niece of COL JONES of the Rockport Democrat, and was happily married about three years but leaves no children. Boonville Enquirer Apr 8 1882. DANIEL GOBLE DANIEL GOBLE aged about 79 years and 6 months died at the residence of his son DR. D. S. GOBLE on Spring Street last Sunday evening at 6:00 of paralysis and was buried in Mt Gilead,Perry County on Wednesday. The REV WM GAMON of Chrisney conducted the services. Rockport Journal Apr 12 1901. MRS ROY KRAMER MRS GLADYS KRAMER 43 died at the Deaconess Hospital in Evansville Tuesday morning after a short illness. MRS KRAMER underwent a major operation two weeks ago and was brought home last weekend but failed to improve and was returned to the hospital where she passed away Tuesday. She is survived by her husband ROY, two sons EARL and DONALD, two daughters MISS JO NELL and MRS ANNA MARIE SHROUDS, five brothers FRANK, WM IVAN, HARRY and CHESTER, and four sisters MRS MILDRED BECKER, MRS SADIE MILLER, MRS HELEN MILLER and MRS CECIL GILES. Short services will be held at the home Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock followed by a service at Cross Roads church at 2:30 o'clock, Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery. Rockport Journal Mar 24 1944 PVT FRANK DOUGLAS PVT FRANK DOUGLAS 43 of Dale formerly of Rockport was killed Saturday afternoon at Bridgedale LA, when struck by a vehicle according to word received by his parents MR and MRS UNION DOUGLAS of Lincoln City. He lived in Rockport while working here with the Southern Railroad, had been in railroad construction work at Camp Claiborne LA during his service in the army. The body arrived in Dale Tuesday and funeral services were held Wednesday by the Santa Claus American Legion with burial in the Garden of Memory cemetery Gentryvile. Surviving are a son SAMMY, his parents, a sister MRS ROY WOODS, two brothers SGT WM L DOUGLAS of Hunter Field GA, and Staff SGT UNION DOUGLAS JR of Atlantic City NJ. Rockport Journal Mar 24 1944 J HARRY MAY J HARRY MAY 70 died suddenly on the street Monday of a heart attack. MR MAY had just left the COCHRAN Battery shop on Main Street when MR COCHRAN saw him fall near the old YATES corner, a physician was called DR GLACKMAN responded immediately but MR MAY was dead when he arrived. His only survivors are two nieces MRS LOUISA BROWN and MRS LUCILLE COLE, two nephews ANDREW ATKINSON and CAROL ATKINSON. His mother MRS RACHEL STILTES passed away last summer. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at AXTON Funeral Home with burial at Sunset Hill Cemetery. Rockport Journal Mar 24 1944 LT PAUL PURDUE LT PAUL PURDUE 22 has been killed in an airplane crash in England, according to word from the war department by his parents MR and MRS ERNEST PURDUE of Newburgh. Outside of being notified that the accident happened March 7 the parents received no details. LT PURDUE came to Rockport in 1940 after graduating from Newburgh High School and became well known here while being employed as assistant manager of the Kroger store on local Main Street. PAUL, who made his home here with MR and MRS K M FOWLER, was greatly interested in basketball and other athletics and soon gained the reputation of one of the city's finest young men. He retained many friend here who were shocked to hear of his death. He resigned his position at Kroger's to enlist in the air corps in January 1942, and received his wings and commission at Blackfield, Texas in July of last year. Lt PURDUE had served as a pilot on a B-24 Liberator since last December. PAUL was in Rockport last summer while on a furlough visiting friends here, many of whom regret the sad news as LT PAUL PURDUE was one of Rockport's own sons. In addition to his parents he is survived by three sisters and four brothers. Rockport Journal Mar 24 1944 WILLIAM BENDER WILLIAM BENDER son of JOHN and CATHERINE BENDER was born Jan 8 1867 and died Sept 29 1933 aged 66 yrs 8 mos. 21 days. The deceased died Friday at his home at 6:30 o'clock from injuries in a fall a week ago. He was united in marriage to NORA KELLAMS in the year 1888, to this union were born eight children, MAY, MRS JOSEPHINE PIERCE, MRS RUTH ASHBY, MYRTLE, MRS IVA MILLER, MARY, PAUL and GUSTA, and three grandchildren. Besides the immediate family above mentioned he leaves to mourn his death, his mother CATHERINE GERLACH, one sister EMMA FELLA, two half sisters, MRS ANNA MUETH, MRS JOHN LASHER, three half brothers GEO, CHARLES and HENRY. Funeral services were held Monday the REV JAMES MCCLARY officiated and assisted by REV F A BROWN and REV ED MCCOY Burial was in Bender Cemetery. Rockport Oct 6 1933 MARSHALL ELY MARSHALL H. ELY aged 86 yrs passed away at his home in Richland on Jan. 1, 1946 at 11:45 p.m. Surviving are his wife and three sons, ALLEN, LOGAN and JAMES ELY. Six daughters OLIVE HALSEY, MRS GRACE ICE, MRS ETHEL GASTON, MRS ALBERTA KINCAID, MRS ABBIE ULMAN and MISS MARIE ELY. Funeral services were held at the Bloomfield Methodist Church on Friday afternoon at 2 pm, burial was at Pleasant Valley Cemetery. Rockport Journal Jan 4 1945 ELIZABETH HULLETT Funeral services were held for MRS ELIZABETH WARREN HULLETT, 62, who died at her home in Hatfield Friday night. Services were held 10 o'clock Monday morning at the AXTON Funeral home here. Burial was at Calhoun KY where brief services were held at the cemetery. Surviving are her husband JAMES, sister MRS ANNA ASHWORTH, brother JAMES WARREN. Rockport Journal Mar 31 1939 DR CHARLES NUNN Former Richland resident DR CHARLES NUNN died in a hospital Monday at Mobile ALA, according to word received by his sister MRS FRANK SWALLOW of this city. DR NUNN, who was a dentist in Leaksville with offices next door to the jail, was wounded in gun battle between bandits who were breaking the jail. Services were held at Leaksville Wednesday afternoon. Besides his sister mentioned, he is survived by his widow his father and stepmother, MR and MRS J NUNN, three brothers HARLAN, FRANK and DR J NUNN, two sisters MRS MILDRED HALE and MRS MABLE SCHRIEBER. Oct 3 1941 CHARLES WOOLARD CHARLES HOMER WOOLARD was born in Spencer county Ind Nov 30 1868 and passed away at his home Friday at 3 a.m., April 6 1916, aged 47 yrs 4 mos. 6 days. He was a son of WILLIAM and JANE WOOLARD who preceded him in death. He was united in marriage to MISS MYTLE KILLIAN Dec 27 1903, to this union was born one daughter who is left to mourn with the mother his loss, also three brothers, and two sisters, a number of relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted Sunday morning at 11 o'clock by the REV A J SANDEFUR and remains were laid in Little Pigeon Cemetery. Rockport Journal Apr 14 1916 EDWARD GARDNER EDWARD GARDNER was born in Germany April 7 1838, he came to America at the age of 25 years. He settled in Memphis Tenn, later coming to Indiana. He was united in marriage to MISS HELENA FRANK in 1879 at Rockport, to this union was born seven children, six daughters and one son. Two daughters and one son preceded him in death in their childhood. Surviving him are his wife and three daughters, MRS BERTHA HEUWINKLE, MRS ANNA TRINKEL, MRS KATIE BENNETT and 11 grandchildren. He died at the home of his daughter MRS ANN TRINKEL on March 16 1923 at the age of 83 yrs 11 mos. and nine days. Chrisney Sun Mar 23 1923 SAMUEL A WILLIAMSON ROBERT BURR shot and killed SAMUEL A WILLIAMSON at Rockport Sunday night. It was charged that BURR was paying illicit attentions to WILLIAMSON's wife. Both are about 27 years of age. BURR is in jail, WILLIAMSON's funeral is set for Tuesday. Boonville Standard Oct 19 1894 MRS ELENOR RIBKEY ELENOR RIBKEY, the youngest child of LAURENT and ELIZABETH HAAG died earlier this week. She was born at New Orleans LA, Dec 17 1849, and her father and mother and two brothers have preceded her in death. Outside her immediate family she never knew a near or remote relative. In Oct 1872 she was united in marriage to HENRY RIBKEY to this union no children were born. Mr RIBKEY preceded her in death seven years last January. About the year 1880 she was converted during a revival held under the ministration of Bro. JOHN A WARD and at the time was united with the Trinity M E Church of this city. Since that time she has always been a consistent and faithful member and a regular attendant at services during those years until incapacitated by her late illness. Rockport Journal Oct 4 1918. CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS WOOD CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS WOOD was born at Jefferson Landing a few miles above Jeffersonville, March 5 1848 and came to this township with his father when a young man. In the year 1873 he married ELIZA TITUS and to this union was born two boys, JOHN E and ERNEST. In 1886 his wife died and in 1887 he married ELIZABETH LYTTON and to them were born two daughters, MRS MAMIE FINCH and MRS ANNA FORSYTHE. He was widely known as a fisherman and was always about the river at all seasons of the year. He has probably made more money from the river and worked harder to do so than any other man in Grandview. The house in which he died was made from timber caught in the river and the furnishing and trimmings were paid for from the sales of pig iron which he raised from a sunken barge. When the river was high he reaped a harvest and when it was low he hunted for things which could not float. He was a man of strong will and always stood for the right as he saw it, was an adept at telling humorous stories and was always ready to tell the best over someone else. He became a member of the Baptist church in 1906. He was buried in the Grandview cemetery Sunday afternoon, the funeral services being held at the grave as his wife was seriously ill with the same malady. Here many friends gathered to pay the last tribute of respect. His age was 64 years and 11 days, He was the last one of his family to die. Grandview Monitor March 21 1912. ELIZABETH LYTTON WOOD MRS ELIZABETH LYTTON WOOD wife of C. C. WOOD, who was so seriously ill Sunday that no funeral services for her husband were held at the home, died Tuesday afternoon, aged 56 years and 12 days; her illness lacking four hours of being the same duration as her husband's. The symptoms in both cases were similar. She spent her early life near Cross Roads. She was married to C. C. WOOD Nov 26 1887 and has since lived in the house in which she died. She has been a member of the Methodist Church for many years. Besides two daughters she has two brothers JAMES and WILL LYTTON, and a sister MRS LOUIS JONES living near Chrisney. The funeral services were held at the graveside Wed afternoon conducted by the REV J D HUDSON. Mar 28 1912 MRS LUCINDA BLAIR MRS LUCINDA BLAIR wife of S W BLAIR and daughter of JAMES WOOD died at her home of this place,Wed morning Mar 7 of consumption. Deceased had been affected for some time but only in the last few weeks has she showed symptoms of rapid sinking.She leaves a husband , several children and many relatives to mourn her loss. The funeral service took place at the residence at 2 pm Thursday. Dale Weekly Mar 9 1888. GEORGE WOOD The body of GEORGE WOOD of Chicago was brought to this place and buried at the old family burying ground south of town last Friday. The deceased was a brother of W. L. WOOD of this place. Besides a wife and child he leaves an aged mother, two brothers and one sister. MR WOOD was well known here having been born and raised near Dale. Rockport Journal Aug 19 1904. MRS SHERMAN BRIDGES MRS PRISCILLA TREMPER BRIDGES died Monday Nov 18 at her home in Carthage Indiana, aged 46 years 9 months and 9 days. Remains were brought to this city and funeral services were held Wednesday from Mayhall's Chapel with burial in Sunset Hill Cemetery, Rev P. F. FOUTS conducted the services. MRS BRIDGES is survived by her husband SHERMAN, four daughters and one son. The family formerly lived here but removed to Mt Vernon thirteen years ago going from there to Carthage. Rockport Democrat.
