Son of William and Mary Mortoff; born July 30, 1895, Steuben County, Ind. Family later moved to Ashley, Dekalb County. Moved to California, in 1916. Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army in December, 1917. Assigned to the 2nd Engineers Corps, and went overseas in February, 1918. Died from wounds July 9, 1918, being the first Dekalb County man to die on foreign soil.
