KAY LASH COLLECTION, CARNEGIE PUBLIC LIBRARY OF STEUBEN COUNTY, ANGOLA, INDIANA ELIZA ANN (GILBERT) ABBEY, 24 Aug 1826 - 06 Nov 1915 Eliza Ann, daughter of Bela and Anna Gilbert, was born near North Amherst, Lorain county, Ohio, Aug. 24, 1826, and passed away at the home of her daughter at East Gilead, Mich., Nov. 6, 1915, at the age of 89 years, 2 months and 12 days. She was the seventh in a family of eight children. She lived in Lorain county until she was sixteen years of age when with her parents she moved to the state of New York, and lived in LeRoy three years, and in Warsaw two years, then moving to Steuben county, Ind., in 1847, where she lived on the farm west of Pleasant Lake, known as the McConnell farm. In 1848 she was married to Jacob D. Abbey, their home being southeast of Pleasant Lake. To them were born three children, Mrs. John Renner, of Angola; Orrin J., who departed this life at the age of 17 years, and Mrs. J. W. Weaver, of East Gilead, Mich. In November of 1889, Mr. and Mrs. Abbey moved to the village of Pleasant Lake, living there fifteen years. Since the death of her husband in 1905, Mrs. Abbey has lived with her daughter, Mrs. J. W. Weaver and family, moving with them to Branch county, Mich., in 1910. In 1862, her husband went to the war, staying three years, leaving her with the care of three children and the farm. Mrs. Abbey was a great reader, the Bible being her chosen book, and she read it through during the fore part of the year 1914. Soon after her eyesight failed and she was unable to read. In June, 1915, she fell and fractured her left hip from which injury she has been a great sufferer, but she always had a smile and a word of cheer for her friends as long as she knew and could talk with them. Mother Abbey was always of a cheerful disposition, making the best of all the trials and hardships that came her way. She was a good christian woman and will be greatly missed in the home and by her many friends. She was ready and longed to go to her eternal home, knowing that the Good Father rewards his children as they deserve. She was the last one of her father's family. She leaves two daughters, many relatives and friends who will greatly miss her. Funeral services were conducted at Pleasant Lake on Tuesday forenoon, Nov. 9, by Rev. J. Humfreys.
