STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 20, 1901, pg. 4, col. 5 MAHALA (BURROUGHS) ALLEN, 03 Feb 1817 - 16 Mar 1901 Mahala Burroughs was born in Hanibal, Oswego county, New York, Feb. 3, 1817, and departed this life March 16, 1901, in Scott township, aged 84 years, 1 month and 13 days. Deceased was united in marriage with Truman C. Allen, Dec. 25, 1833, in Genesee county, New York. She was the mother of eleven children, four sons and seven daughters, also the grandmother of 29 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren. Her husband, three sons and one daughter have preceded her to the better land. She was a firm in believer in the Christian religion and prayer, and was confident in a future and better life beyond the grave. She was heartily attached to her family and friends, always ready to help in sickness and trouble and has been a patient sufferer for the past fifteen years, of which the last three months have been of great suffering and pain, which she bore with great patience. Her home has been in Steuben county for the past 57 years. Funeral services were held at the North Scott Christian church, March 18, 1901, N. L. Sims officiating. Interment in Dygert cemetery. Allen, born about 21 May 1836, died 23 Sep 1864 at Andersonville, Ga., while fighting in the Civil War, aged 28 years, 4 months and 2 days. All the above are buried at Dygert Cemetery, Steuben County, Indiana. Dgtr: Cornelia Almira (Allen) Letts, 05 Dec 1843-18 Oct 1928, married Nelson J. Letts, 2 Feb 1843-15 Sep 1922, the son of Edward and Mary (Van Nattan) Letts. Marriage license in Steuben County Courthouse lists her as Almira C. Allen. They are buried at Circle Hill Cemetery, Angola, Steuben Co., Ind. Son: George T. Allen, 17 Feb 1849-25 Nov 1884 - Dygert Cemetery. Son: William E. Allen, born about 07 Aug 1854-28 Feb 1856, aged 1 year, 6 months and 21 days.
