STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29, 1932, p.1, c.1 SARAH ANN (CAIN) ANSPAUGH, 11 Oct 1830 - 24 Jun 1932 COUNTY'S OLDEST CITIZEN IS DEAD MRS. SARAH ANSPAUGH NEARLY 102 YEARS OLD Passed Away Friday Noon After Shock from Fall in Her Home---Enjoyed Centennial Celebration Mrs. Sarah Anspaugh, Steuben county's oldest citizen, passed away at the home of her son, Jacob, east of Alvarado, in Richland township, on Friday, June 24, at the advanced age of nearly one hundred and two years. Mrs. Anspaugh had been in her usual health of late, following a sickness, a few months ago. She attempted without assistance to get out of her bed Friday morning and fell, fracturing one of her limbs. Death a few hours later was due to shock from the accident. The family and friends of Mrs. Anspaugh celebrated the centennial of her birth at the home of Jacob Anspaugh a year ago last October on which occasion nearly four hundred people called to pay their respects and partake of a beautiful dinner prepared in her honor. She was then in good heath and enjoyed the occasion greatly. It is remarked that several persons of younger years who were present on that occasion have preceded her in death. Funeral services were held for Mrs. Anspaugh at the Mt. Pleasant U. B. church Sunday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, Rev. H. R. Peter. Burial was made in the cemetery adjoining the church. The children, four sons and two daughters, acted as pall bearers at the funeral. Her Life Sarah Cain Anspaugh was born Oct. 11, 1830, and departed this life at the home of her oldest son, Jacob and wife, June 24, 1932, aged 101 years, 8 months and 13 days. In her young womanhood she was united in marriage to John Anspaugh, who preceded her in death, June 5, 1904. To this union were born seven children, one having preceded her to the great beyond. At the age of thirteen she accepted Christ as her savior and united with the German Methodist church of Edon, Ohio. About sixty years ago she moved with her family to the old homestead southeast of Metz, Ind., at which time she transferred her membership to the Mt. Pleasant United Brethren church, where she remained faithful till Christ called her to be with him. Many times she was heard to say, "I am ready to meet my Savior." Grandma Anspaugh was also a member of a Shut-In Society with headquarters at Cincinnati, and a Sunshine Society sponsored by Henry Fields of Shenandoah, Iowa. She leaves to mourn their loss four sons and two daughters, Jacob Anspaugh and Amanda Flegal, of near Edon, Samuel, John and Grant Anspaugh, and Hester Kirk, of Angola. Also nine grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, one great-great- grandchild, one half brother, and three half sisters, also many other relatives and friends.
