Baker was born in Loudoun county, Virginia, Jan. 27, 1831, and departed this life March 4, 1905, aged 74 years, 1 month and five days. He came to Steuben County in May 1850. Was educated in the common schools and taught in the winters of 1854 and 1855, the first term at Richland Center and the last at No. 6 in Otsego. March 4, 1855, he was joined in marriage with Selinda E. Keyes, and to this union were born three children, two dying in infancy, and Sarah E., wife of G. W. Goudy. Mrs. Baker died June 11, 1863, and on Dec. 20 of that year he was married to Catherine B. Sanxter, and to this union were born three children, Charles E., Mary P., wife of Albert Bell, Cora R., wife of Freeman McCool. At the age of nineteen he united with the Methodist church and remained faithful until death. For forty years he was an official member of the church, faithful, generous and true in every relation, his life being a benediction to all who came in contact with its influence. He leaves to mourn a son, three daughters, six grand-children, four brothers, one sister and a large circle of relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at Alvarado, March 7, conducted by his pastor, Rev. O. S. Hart. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: John S. Baker, 27 Jan 1831 - 04 Mar 1905, married Selinda E. CHILDREN OF THE FIRST MARRIAGE: Sarah E. (Baker) Goudy, 1857 - 1906, was the first wife of George W. Goudy, 1850 - 1934. On 15 Dec 1915, he married Mrs. Maria Benson Goudy, 1849 - 1931, whose first husband was (________) Benson. They are buried at Circle Hill Cemetery, Angola, Steuben County, IN. Samuel E. Baker, infant son. He is buried at Alvarado Cemetery. William H. Baker, infant son, died 17 June 1863. His mother, Selinda, died 6 days prior to his death so she probably died due to childbirth problems. He is buried at Alvarado Cemetery. CHILDREN OF THE SECOND MARRIAGE: Charles E. Baker, 06 May 1865 - 1939, on 11 Apr 1888, married Emma A. (Chard) Baker, 1864 - 1920. Mary P. (Baker) Bell, 1867 - 03 May 1949, married Albert R. Bell, 1868 - 03 Jun 1942. Cora R. (Baker) McCool, 1879 - 10 May 1949, married Freeman McCool, 1876 - 1932. All the children from the second marriage and their spouses are buried at Hamilton Cemetery, Steuben County, In.
