STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1890, p.l,c.6 ELIZA A. (CROOKS) BATTREALL, 16 Sep 1836 - 03 Nov 1890 Eliza A. Crooks was born in Delaware county, Onio, September 16, 1836, and was married to John W. Battreall at Muncie, In., October 18, 1860. The family came to Angola in 1867 and since have been residents of this city. Husband and wife united by letter with the Angola M. E. church in 1873. Two children were born to them, a daughter who died soon after coming to Angola, and one son, Leon D., aged 21 years, now the sole survivor of the family. Mrs. Battreall was a loyal soldier's widow. Her husband entered his country's service soon after their marriage early in 1861 and continued until the close of the war and earned an honorable record. He died December 24, 1874, from disabilities contracted therein. Mrs. Battreall lived a useful, instructive and consistent life. Loyal as a countrywoman, loyal as a christian, loyal in counsel and action, she was universally admired and respected for these qualities by her neighbors and acquaintances of Angola. After a long, severe illness, she died at her home on November 3, 1890, aged 54 years, 2 months and 17 days. As a token of respect for a loyal wife and woman, whose interest was often manifested by sympathy for and care of her husband's comrades, old soldiers appeared as guard of honor and bearers.
