STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, July 18, 1900, page 1, column 8 MARGARET (ICKES) BENEDICT, 12 May 1806 - 03 Jul 1900 Almost One Hundred Years Old. Margaret Ickes, the subject of this sketch, was born in Gettysburg, Pa., May 12, 1806, and died at the home of her son, William Benedict, in Angola, Ind., July 3, 1900, aged 94 years, one month and 21 days. In 1818 she moved with her parents to Franklin county, Pa., where in 1838, she was united in marriage to Joshua Benedict. To this union were born seven children, two of whom died in infancy. The others, Abraham Benedict, Rives, Ohio; Mrs. Cleon Tafft, Bossville, Oklahoma; Mrs. O. R. Bennett, Arkansas City, Kansas; Jacob Benedict, Northwest Ohio, and William Benedict, of Angola, survive her. In 1846 she moved with her husband and family to Mansfield, Ohio, and in 1858 to Williams county, Ohio, where thirty years ago her companion answered the summons of his Maker. She remained at the old home for about two years after her husband's death, then lived with her youngest daughter for thirteen years. For the past fifteen years she has spent most of her time with her son William in and around Angola. In her early girlhood she became a member of the Lutheran church, and later with the Church of God, of which she remained a devoted member until death. She longed for death, and passed quietly through its open gateway into the beautiful beyond where the blind can see and where sorrow and death can never come. (Picture included with obit) Funeral services were held at South Amboy, Mich., July 5, Rev. John Clark officiating. Burial at South Amboy beside her companion of her early years.
