PETER BEST, BORN ABOUT 1813 - 29 Jun 1877

   Another old settler has gone.  Mr. Peter Best, a well 
known and highly respected citizen of Jamestown, in this 
county, died on Friday, the 29th of June.  He came to this 
State from the State of New York some twenty-five or twenty-
six years ago and settled upon the farm where he died.  Mr. 
Best has been in very poor health-much of the time quite sick 
and helpless-since 1870.  He had a complication of disorders 
and suffered much.  He died siting in his chair.
   Mr. Best was the first man to place his name on the 
subscription list of the STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, when this paper 
was first started by Mr. Bromigem, twenty-one years ago.

   Peter Best, ab. 1813 - 29 Jun 2877, married 1st, Joanna 
(______) Best, 27 Mar 1817 - 16 Oct 1853.  They had one 
child, John A. Best, 16 Sep 1848 - 01 Aug 1852.  They are all 
buried at Jamestown Cemetery, Steuben County, Indiana.

   On 01 Jun 1855 in Branch County, Michigan, Peter married 
Catherine A. (Rice) Best, 22 Aug 1822 - 04 Sep 1890 who is 
buried at Circle Hill Cemetery, Angola, Steuben County, 
Indiana.

   Mary J. Best, 08 Jul 1859 - 09 Jul 1872, burial place 
unknown.
   Sonora G. Best, 18 Jul 1859 - 16 Sep 1863, buried at 
Jamestown Cemetery.
   Vincent A. Best, 22 Sep 1861 - 28 Aug 1863, buried at 
Jamestown Cemetery.
   Emma (Best) Gates, 1865 - 1905, on 08 May 1881 in Branch 
County, Michigan, married William J. C. Gates, 18 Dec 1854 - 
26 Mar 1933.  They are buried at Circle Hill Cemetery.
