STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 1881, p.8 ITEM #1, column 4, ITEM #2-obituary, column 2 ITEM #2, OBITUARY: CAPTAIN CHARLES CLINTON BODLEY, 25 Jun 1807 - 03 Feb 1881 Uncle Charles Bodley died at the residence of his daughter, near Hillsdale, on Feb. 3, 1881, while there on a visit. The remains were brought back and buried in the north cemetery the following Monday. Uncle Charles (as he was generally called) was born in the state of New York and moved to this county some 43 years ago. He was the father of ten children, seven of whom survive him, the youngest being 25 years of age. Uncle Charles was a devoted Christian, a good neighbor, a kind husband and father, and now sleeps the sleep that knows no waking, but our loss is his gain. ITEM #1: BODLEY---In Hillsdale, Mich., Feb. 3, 1881, Capt. Charles C. Bodley, aged 74 years. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Charles Clinton Bodley (Capt.), 25 Jan 1807 - 03 Feb 1881, on 13 Nov 1828, married Polly M. (VanHouten) Bodley, 21 Jun 1813 - 12 Apr 1900. They are buried at Block Cemetery, Steuben County, Indiana. Charles was the son of Levi Bodley, born 31 Aug 1771 in Wawarsing, Ulster County, N.Y., and Mary (DeWitt) Bodley, born 09 Aug 1773 in Wawarsing, Ulster County, N.Y. Polly was the daughter of Abraham and Latina (____) VanHouten. SOME OF THE CHILDREN OF THE MARRIAGE OF CHARLES AND POLLY: Emily A. Bodley, died 04 Feb 1846, aged 15 years, 5 months and 4 days. Philo D. Bodley, died 30 Dec 1862, at Holly Springs, Miss., aged 21 years, 11 months and 23 days. Jesse Bodley, died 16 Oct 1848, age 2 months. Infant, possibly Jason, died 1837. All of the above children are buried at Block Cemetery. Mary C. (Bodley) Shaffstall, born about 1851, on 04 Jul 1868, married Nathaniel Shaffstall who was born in 1847. Maria (Bodley) Sutherland, on 28 Nov 1846, married Norman Sutherland. Susan Mary (Bodley) Davis, 12 Jan 1833 - 06 Mar 1922, on 28 Feb 1856, married George G. Davis, 01 May 1823 - 27 Feb 1900. They are buried in Montana. Aaron Bodley, 0n 16 Dec 1858, married Lucinda E. (Dudley) Bodley, _______ (Bodley) Stone, married J. R. Stone. Augusta (Bodley) Woodworth, married _____ Woodworth.
