STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 25, 1900, pg. 5, col. 5 POLLY M. (VanHOUTEN) BODLEY, 21 Jun 1813 - 12 Apr 1900 DIED At the home of her daughter, Mrs. Augusta Walworth, Homer, Mich., April 12, 1900, Mrs. Polly M. Bodley, widow of Charles C. Bodley, aged 86 years, 9 months and 22 days. Polly M. VanHouten was born in the state of New York, June 21, 1813, and with her parents moved to Ohio when quite young. Nov. 13, 1828, she was united in marriage with Charles C. Bodley, and soon after moved to Steuben county, where they lived until his death in 1881. To them were born ten children, five of whom, Mrs. Norman Sutherland, of Kansas; Mrs. George Davis, of Montana; Aaron Bodley, of Los Angeles, California; Mrs. J. R. Stone, of Hillsdale, and Mrs. Augusta Walworth, of Homer, Mich., survive her. About ten weeks prior to her death she slipped and fell on the ice, from the effects of which, and heart trouble, she never recovered. Her last days were those of peace and joy. Although her sufferings were great, yet she knew she had committed all to Him who doeth all things well. Here in Salem township, Mr. and Mrs. Bodley endured the hardships incident to pioneer life, and labored earnestly for the support of a large family and the improvement of the vicinity in which they lived. It was they who built the first house in Salem township. The early part of Mr. Bodley's life was devoted to teaching, working at the carpenter trade and farming. They were connected, religiously, with the Advents, in which faith they lived and died. They were good citizens, constant christians, and lived a life that others might well emulate. Funeral services were held at the North church, April 18, conducted by Rev. J. B. Hawkins, of Butler. Her remains were laid to rest beside her husband in the cemetery near the church.
