STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 26, 1877, p.3, c.1 PETER BOWMAN, 15 Mar 1820 - 23 Dec 1877 Death of Ex-Sheriff Bowman The well known Peter Bowman, of this village, ex-Sheriff of the county, died at his residence of consumption, last Sunday morning, Dec. 23d inst., aged nearly fifty-eight years. Mr. Bowman came to this county from Ohio, some thirty-eight or thirty-nine years ago, and was counted as one of the pioneers, although he was hardly more than a boy at the time. He was a house carpenter and joiner by trade, and was a very steady, quiet, industrious and exemplary man and an excellent citizen. He was elected to the Sheriff's office in 1857 and filled that position with great acceptance four years. He was married to the wife he now leaves a widow, in February, 1858. For a number of years last passed he has been a victim to that invidious disease which, after causing him much suffering of late, has taken him to his grave. He leaves besides his widow, a family of seven children-four boys and three girls-a number of whom are too young to support themselves. This family requires the cordial sympathy and aid of their friends. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Peter Bowman, 15 Mar 1820 - 23 Dec 1877, on 22 Feb 1858, married Adeliza E. (Gillett) Bowman, 1840 - 1892.
