THE FOLLOWING IS FROM AN ARTICLE IN THE POWERS FAMILY HISTORY AVAILABLE FROM THE CARNEGIE PUBLIC LIBRARY, ANGOLA, IN., FOR IN-HOUSE USE ONLY WRITTEDN BY CALVIN `PUT' POWERS CONCERNING THE MIGRATION OF THE POWERS FAMILY TO BE THE PIONEER SETTLERS IN YORK TOWNSHIP, STEUBEN COUNTY, IN. It is dated 08 Jul 1905 when he was past seventy years of age. "The caravan, aside from their teams and wagons, consisting of eight or ten heads of milch cows, about the same number of young cattle and calves driven by the oldest of the boys of the families, which consisted of Clark and Andrew of Stephen's family, Myron and Edwin of Winn's family, and George Brooks, a boy of about twelve years old and the oldest of the five herdsmen. He was employed by Clark Powers, a brother of those mentioned and at the time a single man. These boys helped drive the stock, a portion of which belonged to the brother Clerk, who subsequently married and settled with his brothers in York Township, Steuben County, State of Indiana." "Before I proceed any further, I want to say George Brooks, the boy above mentioned, was engaged by Clark powers, and after Clark married and settled, George worked for him long enough to pay for 80 acres of land of which he subsequently made him a farm. In the fall of the same year, George's father and mother and the rest of the family came from the state of New York and settled with the Powers families in York Township." Page 48 of the Powers Family History explains that while George was privately employed by Clark Powers, he stayed behind with Calvin to help take care of infant Lorenzo Powers and Maria Emiline (Cory ) Powers while she was recuperating from her life threatening illness which occurred on their way to Indiana. Without George it would have been impossible for Calvin to continue on to Indiana after Maria Emiline recovered enough to withstand the rigors of such a trip.
