He had been a devoted member of the United Brethren for sixty years, and aside from his immediate family, the prosperity of Zion was first in his thought, and the reading and meditation on the Divine word the comfort and stay of his life. He had read his German Bible from Genesis to the close of Revelation, eleven times, and had reached the Acts of the Apostles in his twelfth reading. He was well posted in the Bible and loved to quote from it. For the direction of the U. B. church in his neighborhood, he gave the land, and practically paid all the expense of the construction of the building, and bought the bell that sounded forth a welcome to all the people of that section.
