KAY LASH COLLECTION, CARNEGIE PUBLIC LIBRARY, ANGOLA, STEUBEN COUNTY, INDIANA PUBLISHED IN THE STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, ANGOLA, INDIANA, 13 APR 1910 DAVID N. E. BROWN, 30 NOV 1831 - 31 MAR 1910 LYDIA ANN (HOOPES) BROWN, 06 DEC 1828 - 02 APR 1910 A DOUBLE FUNERAL For more than fifty years Dr. N. E. Brown and his estimable wife trod the same pathway, shared in each other's sorrows and rejoiced as one in their successes and victories. They were inseparable in life and as events show inseparable in death. During the winter they have both been in poor health, she perhaps the worse off of the two, but the death angel came to him first when on Thursday morning he passed from earth into eternity. The funeral was to have been held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Hamilton. After his death Mrs. Brown was up and down but arranged to attend the funeral. Saturday morning she suffered from a pain in her side, but a physician who was summoned thought it nothing serious. About 8 o'clock in the evening she was talking with her grand- daughter saying that as her companion had gone she had no desire to live longer and hoped that she could soon be with him in that everlasting sleep that knoweth no awakening. Little did she realize, nor those about her, that in those moments the death angel was hovering over her, for the next instant she passed into a slumber and in an hour had joined her husband in death. Not a struggle, nor an outward sign was there to indicate her passing. It was as gentle and as quiet and as easy as the gradual changing of twilight into darkness. David N. E. Brown was born in Columbiana county, Ohio, Nov. 30th, 1831, and died at his home in Butler, Ind., March 31st, 1910, aged 78 years, 4 months and one day. Lydia Ann Hoopes was born in Columbiana county, Ohio, Dec. 6, 1828, and died in Butler, Ind., April 2nd, 1910, aged 81 years, 3 months and 26 days. They were united in marriage Sep. 23, 1855, thus spending nearly 55 years in loving companionship. To them were born seven children, two having in infancy preceded them to a better home. They leave to mourn their loss, three sons, two daughters, eleven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Besides these Dr. Brown leaves two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Dixon, of Hamilton, and Mrs. Mary Thomas, of North Manchester. Mrs. Brown also leaves one sister, Mrs. Mary Cass, of Montgomery, Mich. Dr. Brown came to Steuben county in 1847 and Mrs. Brown in 1854. Dr. Brown commenced the study of medicine under Doctor Alphonso Wood of Angola and commenced practice of his profession in Hillsdale county, Mich., in the year 1855 and continued the same, until 1895 when age and ill health compelled him to retire from active life. In 1857 they moved to Hamilton and lived there until 1894 when they moved to Butler, which place has since been their home. Dr. Brown joined the Masonic order 55 years ago and in his death this order loses one of its oldest and most faithful members. Dr. and Mrs. Brown were both converted and joined the M.E. church nearly forty years ago and have since lived consistent Christian lives. While in this double affliction it seems hard to see the hand of a loving Father, it is but the fulfillment of their own oft expressed wish, "Let us both go at the same time." And today while our hearts are bowed with grief, let us console ourselves with the thought that though separated for a few days, today they are again united in the land where parting shall come no more. The Masonic order held services on Sunday at 4 p.m. Short services were held at the home by Rev. Parker assisted by Rev. Crouse before leaving for Hamilton. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: David N. E.
