BROWN, 10 Dec 1830 - 05 Aug 1878 Germ Brown, senior editor of the REPUBLICAN, died at his home in Angola at 6:50 p.m., Monday, Aug. 5, aged 47 years, 7 months and 26 days. He was born in Londonderry, Vermont, in 1830, and when seven years of age came with his parents to Orland. In 1846 he graduated from the Collegiate Institute at Ontario, LaGrange county, taught by Rufus Patch. When the war of the Rebellion broke out he enlisted with the three months' volunteers as a private in the 1st Michigan and was at the battle of Bull Run. In August, 1862, he enlisted as a private in Co. B., 100th Indiana, and remained in the service until the close of the war. In 1874, he, in company with Frank Macartney, purchased the REPUBLICAN and retained his connection with the paper until death. He loved his paper, his home and the church. Josephine (Goldsmith) Brown, 1843 - 24 Dec 1908, daughter of Harvey H. and Phebe Ann Goldsmith. German and his wife are buried at Circle Hill Cemetery, Angola, Steuben County, Indiana, with an infant son who died in Nov. 1878. On 04 May 1884, Josephine married Omar I. Clark, 25 Jul 1832 - 11 Sep 1895, who is buried at Clark Cemetery, Steuben County, Indiana. German's parents were Emery Brown, 30 Aug 1799 - 05 Oct 1870, and Lydia Brown, 10 Feb 1814 - 13 Jan 1875. They are buried at Memorial Grove, Steuben County, Indiana. A brother, Orrin Brown, 01 Sep 1833 - 16 Sep 1898, married Emily (Fuller) Brown Jennings, 1845 - 1931.
