STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, Wednesday, September 28, 1898, pg. 1, col, 7 ORRIN BROWN, son of Emery and Lucy Ann Brown, was born in Londonderry, Vermont, Sept. 1, 1833, died Sept. 16, 1898, aged 65 years and 15 days. He came with his father's family to "Vermont Settlement" (now Orland) in 1836. His father was a public-spirited man and contributed generously toward building up the town, and was especially interested in building the Orland Seminary. It was at this school his boys ere educated. Orrin Brown was noted for his scholarship in literature and music. The former was acquired under the instruction of Profs. Harper and Gibson. The latter while a pupil under Prof. W. T. Heath. His mother died in his infancy, and he was he last of the family, except his half sister, Mrs. Ellen McGowan, of Portland, Oregon. In his every day life he was quiet and unassuming and conspicuous for his love for home. In 1864 he was married to Miss Emily Fuller. To them was born one son whose home is in Chicago. Mr. Brown had been an invalid for a number of years, but bore his sufferings uncomplainingly, sustained by believing that God, in answer to his prayers, would give him a life of blessed immortality beyond the grave. A short time before his death he said, "this is a beautiful world and I would like to stay here a little while longer with my family, but God's will not mine be done. And I have prayed that God in His infinite mercy would grant me an easy death." That prayer too was answered, for he passed away as quietly as a weary child falls asleep on its mother's breast. He leaves a widow and one son, and one sister besides other relatives and friends to mourn his loss. Funeral services were held at his home on Saturday, Sept. 17, conducted by Rev. L. C. Hopple, pastor of he Baptist church, who preached an appropriate sermon which was a comfort to the afflicted widow and son as well as to his other friends. He was laid to rest in Greenlawn cemetery, surrounded by flowers and evergreens furnished by his numerous friends. So one by one the old settlers are passing away. Soon none will be left to tell their story. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Orrin Brown, 01 Sep 1833-16 Sep 1898, son of Emery, born about 30 Aug 1799, died 05 Oct 1870, and his 1st wife, Lucy Ann Brown.
