ITEM #2: Obituary - James Warren Butler Was born in Salem township, Steuben county, Indiana, April 25, 1843, and died at his place of birth, May 13, 1895, aged 52 years and 18 days. Jesse Butler, his father, was born in Vermont and moved with his two brothers, Loren and Daniel, to Salem township, in this county, in July 1838, and resided on the land known as the Butler farm until his death, March 20, 1874, aged 86 years. His wife, mother of deceased, died April 22, 1849, on the same farm. Seymour S. Butler, brother of James, died April 20, 1882, at fifty years of age. Perthenia A. Butler, a sister, died Jun 22, 1888, aged 51 years. Two children of Jesse and wife died in infancy, one in Vermont and the other in Salem. Mrs. Mary J. Bodley, wife of L. N. Bodley, survives as the only one left of the family. August 28, 1864, the subject of this sketch was married to Miss Eleanora Wright who died about ten years ago, leaving him one son, Elbridge, and two daughters, Mary, now the wife of Benj. Hayward, and Miss Lena Butler, who faithfully attended at his bedside during his illness and in sorrow followed his remains to the grave. The period of his life extends over the greater part of the history of Steuben county, and he had a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. He was an active sympathizer with the oppressed and afflicted and a liberal supporter of all movements for friendship and charity. Funeral services were conducted at the Block church in Salem, by Rev. J. E. Ervin, of Angola, and by Americus Lodge, K. of P., of which he was a member. (A photograph of the deceased was included with the obituary.) ITEM #3: TRIBUTE IN RECOGNITION OF JAMES WARREN BUTLER: James W. Butler, member of Americus Lodge, No. 376, K. of P., Salem Center, Indiana, was called from the duties and labors of this life into the presence of the great Instructor of instructors, May 13, 1895. In recognition of his invaluable services, the brothers of this lodge desire to express-so far as feeble words can express-their appreciation of his worth, both as a brother and a loyal energetic citizen. His life among us was a grand lesson-a lesson of energy and patience, of cheerful aspiration and generous self-sacrifice, of sympathy, forbearance and love toward his brothers and friends. In his death not only does the lodge of Salem suffer a great loss, but the cause of Pyhthianism throughout the county will feel that a strong friend, brother and advocate has been removed. Yet there is comfort in the knowledge that the example of his energetic, generous character will still live to instruct and inspire a much larger circle that that from which he was taken. To the children and friends of the deceased, we offer our heartfelt sympathy. The great Instructor is also our father and our friend-He doeth all things well. It is ordered that this memorial be entered upon the records of this lodge and a copy be furnished to each of the county papers for publication. / L. J. Clay Com: - J. E. Raub \ E. B.
