STEPHEN CALVIN, 08 May 1829 - 13 Apr 1903

   Stephen Calvin, he subject of this sketch, was born in Portage county, 
Ohio, May 8, 1829, and was married to Lucinda Norris, March 23, 1858, and 
died April 13, 1903.
   
   Soon after his marriage he and his good wife removed from Williams 
county, Ohio, to Steuben county, locating on a farm just west of Metz, 
where were born to them one son and four daughters; and of this family 
only one daughter survives.  Mr. Calvin's life was a blessing and help to 
the community in which he lived.  Selfishness had no place in his heart, 
and he was truly a good man.  At the opening of the war he was in poor 
health, but was so interested and patriotic that he hired a substitute and 
sent him to fight the battles he was unable to do, and which the 
government would not have required of him under the circumstances.  He was 
a nearby neighbor to all in need, giving of his means and thought without 
restraint.  While the citizens of this day at Metz survive, the memory of 
Stephen Calvin will be fresh and helpful in their minds, as a man, honest, 
kind and true.

   The 1880 United States Census, Richland Township, Steuben County, 
Indiana, Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah, Family History 
Library Film #1254312, NA Film Number T9-0312, Page Number 398B, has 
another child listed, Stulla Calvin, age 5, born in Indiana.
