STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 1, 1899, page 1, column 7 JAMES GILFOFD CAMERON, M.D., 05 Jan 1844 - 21 Feb 1899 DIED at his home in Edon, Ohio, Feb. 21st, 1899, James Gilford Cameron, aged 55 years, 1 month and 16 days. Deceased was born Jan. 5, 1844, and was the second of a family of nine children, all of whom but one are yet living. His parents were pioneers of Steuben county, locating in Richland township in 1841 and living there until their death. His father was well known and esteemed for the work which he accomplished for both county and township while acting in the capacity of a public officer. Dr. Cameron was one of the early teachers of Steuben county, and was for some time a student of Hillsdale college. He read medicine with Dr. H. D. Wood when the latter was located at Metz, after which he attended Rush Medical college in Chicago, graduating from there in 1869. Soon after his graduation he located at Edon, Ohio, and in that town and vicinity for thirty years he practiced his profession with untiring energy. His zeal and devotion to his calling were marked, and he administered to the afflicted long after his own vital powers had begun to fail. In his death, the vicinity in which he worked so faithfully may well feel that it will be hard to replace his services. He was married to Hannah Webb, Feb. 6, 1869. There were born to them three children, one son and two daughters who with their mother survive him. The burial ceremonies were in charge of the Masonic order assisted by the Knights of Pythias. The address was by Judge Bowersox, of Bryan, Ohio, an old acquaintance and warm friend of Dr. Cameron. Submitted by: Mona Hilden-Beckwith e-mail: hilbeck123@att.net
