CARPENTER, Phoebe Ann Second daughter of Joshua and Maria Gannon Carpenter, was born in Duchess County, N.Y., Dec 25, 1825. She, with her parents, two sisters and one brother, came to Fulton county Ohio, when she was quite small. When only ten years old, her mother died leaving in her and her older sister's care, the two smaller children all of whom have preceded her to the beyond. When she was about eighteen years old her father came to Indiana and bought the farm now owned by John Roberts, to which he soon moved his family. About one year later, Jan. 1, 1846, there came a double wedding in the new home, Samuel Harvey Elliott and Jane Smiley, and Benjamin Dygert and Phoebe Ann Carpenter. The two families established homes within one-half mile of each other, living there continuously for nearly fifty years. The plans were laid for a double golden wedding which could not be carried out on account of the death of Mr. Elliott only a few months previous to the anniversary day. Mrs. Elliott is now the only one of the four still living. To Phoebe Ann and Benj. Dygert were born six children, one dying in infancy. The others, Manda Ryan, Louisa Clark, George Dygert, Garrett Dygert, and Miss Lanna Dygert, nineteen grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren together with a host of other relatives and friends mourn the loss of a kind and loving mother, grandmother, friend and neighbor. Mr. and Mrs. Dygert lived in their old home for nearly sixty-two years when on Aug. 9, 1907, the husband fell asleep, the wife joining him Aug. 9, 1909, aged 82 years, 7 months and 15 days, having lived the last two years with her son Garrett. Funeral services were conducted by Elder Vernon Stauffer, Aug. 11, 1909. Note: buried at Dygert Cemetery, Steuben County, IN Submitted by: Gerry and Paula Christiansen gerryc@iserv.net
