STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 13, 1881, p.8, c.1 JAMES CARTER, 29 Sep 1811 - 09 Apr 1881 Mr. James Carter, one of the well-known and most honored citizens of this township, died at his home near Pleasant Lake, April 9, 1881, aged 69 years, 6 months and 11 days. He was one of four brothers who were among the early settlers here, of whom there is now but one survivor. He was born in Lucerne county, Pa., Sept. 29, 1811; moved with his parents to Delaware county, Ohio, in 1815; and came to Steuben county in 1838, having, previous to this date, enlisted and served a term of five years in the 6th Regt. U. S. Infantry of the regular army, and was in the Black Hawk war. He was a member of the detachment of men that captured Black Hawk. He spent one year in St. Louis and another in Louisiana after his discharge from the army. He was married in 1843 to Miss Louisa Frink; from this union there is but one child, Mrs. Stacey Lockwood. This wife died in a few years after their marriage, and he then married Miss Mary Stealy, a sister of Jacob Stealy, of Angola. There were six daughters and one son born unto them, the son and one daughter died in youth. She died in 1863, and in 1864, he was married to Mrs. Delia Smith who survives him. He was held in the highest esteem by his neighbors and all who knew him. He held the office of county commissioner for several years, and was justice of the peace seventeen years. Although almost entirely self educated, he was a scholar of no small attainment. A great reader and profound thinker, his opinion was considered valuable on all subjects. James was the son of Jonas Carter Sr., a pioneer in 1837, born Jun 1767, died 19 Nov 1842, and Catherine (Wheeler) Carter, 1774 - 19 Jan 1853. They are buried at Carter Cemetery. CHILDREN OF 1ST MARRIAGE: Marian (Carter) Lockwood, 16 Feb 1844 - 1908, married J. Stacy Lockwood, 1839 - 1907. They are buried at Carter Cemetery. Louisa Carter, 30 Mar 1847 - 03 Oct 1847. Buried at Carter Cemetery. The mother died shortly after she was born. James 2nd wife was Mary (Stealey) Carter, 21 May 1822 - 01 Aug 1863. She is buried at Carter Cemetery. He parents were the Rev. John and Susanna H. (Seitz) Stealey. CHILDREN OF 2ND MARRIAGE: Catherine Carter, died 10 Sep 1856, buried at Carter Cemetery. John C. Carter, 20 Apr 1848 - 27 Mar 1870, buried at Carter Cemetery. Maria Carter, 08 Dec 1850 - 25 Oct 1893, buried at Carter Cemetery. Ollie Carter, daughter, age 19 in the 1880 United States Census, Steuben Township, Steuben County, Indiana, Family History Library Film #1254312, NA Film Number T9-0312, page #302B. James 3rd wife was Mrs. Delia Smith Carter, age 64 in the 1880 United States Census. SIBLINGS OF JAMES CARTER: Sarah (Carter) Curtis died in Sep 1869. She was married to John Curtis of Delaware County, Ohio. Rufus Carter died in Delaware County, Ohio. Lewis Carter, 16 Jul 1800 - 30 Mar 1850, married Laura (____) Carter, 07 Jul 1812 - 09 Feb 1874. They are buried at Carter Cemetery. Abigail Carter died in Ohio. John N. Carter, no information. Jonas Carter Jr., died in Wood County, Ohio. Samuel Carter, 27 Jun 1814 - 08 Sep 1893, married Sarah A. (Frink) Carter, 20 Jun 1820 - 02 Apr 1873. They are buried at Carter Cemetery. Mary Ann (Carter) Jackson, 30 Dec 1817 - 10 Jan 1887, married Theophilus Jackson, 21 Oct 1814 - 02 Dec 1891. They are buried at Carter Cemetery. Theophilus was the son of John L. Jackson, 20 Jan 1792 - 09 Jun 1867, and Hesadiah (McMillan) Jackson, 22 Jan 1795 - 15 Feb 1863. They are buried at Circle Hlll Cemetery, Angola, Steuben County, Indiana.
