STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 20, 1899, page 1, column 6 WILLIAM HENRY CARVER, 10 May 1839 - 06 Dec 1899 The citizens of Orland and vicinity are again called to mourn over the death of one of the early settlers. William henry Carver was born May 10, 1839, died Dec 6th, 1899, aged 60 years, 6 months and 26 days. Most of Mr. Carver's life was spent in Orland. He was a volunteer in Co. B. 100th Indiana regiment, and was discharged on account of failing eye sight. In June 1864 he was married to Miss Mary Stocker. To them were born seven children, five of whom are living. Nina, their first born died in 1891. Baby Lottie died in infancy and Mrs. Mary Carver died in 1890. In 1895 Mr. Carver married Mrs. Marta Lyon, who is left to mourn the loss of an affectionate husband. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church, of which he had been a prominent member over thirty years, always prompt in the discharge of his christian duties. Rev. Mr. Kemp, pastor of the M. E. church, preached an appropriate sermon, which was comforting to the bereaved family. The church was filled with friends and many were unable to gain admittance. Relatives attended from Angola, Lima, Salem and other places. The G. A. R. attended in a body, and his comrades were his pall bearers. The coffin was draped with the stars and stripes. The church was decorated appropriately and all was done that friends could do to show respect to the dead and sympathy for the living. His comrades bore him tenderly to Green Lawn and laid him beside his wife and children who had gone before.
