STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, 10 MAY 1916, ALSO KAY LASH COLLECTION, CARNEGIE PUBLIC LIBRARY, ANGOLA, IN. JOSEPH G. CHASEY, 18 MAR 1836 - 04 MAY 1916 Joseph G. Chasey was born in Richland county, Ohio, March 18, 1836; died in Angola, Ind., May 4, 1916, aged 80 years, 1 month and 17 days. He was the son of John and Mary Chasey, to whom were born eleven children. He came with his parents to DeKalb county, Ind., in 1858. Four of the sons enlisted in the war for the preservation of the union, the deceased, who enlisted in Co. D, 74th Indiana, being the only one of the four to return from the war alive. He saw hard service during the three years of his enlistment, being with Sherman on his march to the sea, and in the battles attendant upon that campaign. Soon after the war, on March 15, 1866, Mr. Chasey was united in marriage with Adaline Freed, of DeKalb county. Shortly afterward they moved to a farm in Steuben county, a few miles southwest of Angola, where for nearly a half a century they lived and prospered together and wrought a substantial home from the wild country of the early days. Because of declining years, and having fulfilled well a life's task, they came to Angola a few years ago, where they built a home and spent the remainder of their days together, leaving the farm in charge of their son Ottomer. To them were born eight children, six daughters and two sons, of whom two daughters, Mrs. E. C. Klink and Mrs. Mary Ettinger, and one son, Ottomer W. survive, together with six grandsons, one granddaughter, and one great gransdon. On March 15, 1916, Mr. and Mrs. Chasey celebrated, in a quiet way, their golden wedding anniversary, and received the congratulations of many neighbors and friends, who had known themand admired them for the sturdy and upright lives which they had lived in the community. Mr. Chasey was a member of the Angola ledge of Masons and of the B. J. Crosswait Post G. A. R. and in health was a regular attendant. In his associations with these bodies he was a loyal and faithful member and received the esteem of his associates. During the past year Mr. Chasey had been in failing health, but with Mrs. Chasey they decided to continue their custom of the past few years and spend the winter in Florida. He was taken ill there during the latter part of the winter, and was not able to be about after his return home a few weeks ago, gradually failing until death came quietly, like refreshing sleep after a day of strenuous activity. In his going the wife of a half century mourns the loss of a faithful helpmeet, the children a father, and ways zealous for their welfare, and the community a good man and a loyal citizen. The Grand Army post held a funeral service at the home last Friday evening, and the Masonic lodge and a large number of old time neighbors and friends joined in the funeral service held at the home Saturday afternoon, Rev. Millard Pell, of the Methodist church, preaching the sermon. The burial was in the Mount Zion cemetery. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Joseph G.
