GEORGE HENRY CLAFLIN, 12 Jul 1861 - 10 Mar 1926 George H. Claflin, son of Henry and Zippra Claflin, was born in Erie County, Ohio, July 12, 1861. He moved with his parents to Orland when 6 years of age. His father was killed in service during the Civil War. After the death of his mother, he made his home for several years with his aunt, Mrs. Orpha Claflin, who was indeed a mother to him in every way. When about 18 years of age, he went to Kankakee, Illinois. He was married to Ida McKibben, of near Orland, March 10, 1891. To this union were born five children, Harry, Cyril an Pauline, of South Bend; Eula, who passed away in 1923, and Donald, who died in infancy. They lived in Chicago a few years, then came back to their farm, near Orland. His wife passed away in 1911, leaving him to bring up his children without a loving mother's care and guidance. He filled her place as only a devoted father can, and by hard struggles and much sacrifice kept the family together until all were grown to manhood and womanhood. The last two years he had made his home with his son, Harry, in South Bend, where, after a short illness. He quietly passed away, aged 64 years, 7 months and 28 days. He leaves to mourn the loss of a good father, his immediate family, two grandchildren and a host of friends. Funeral was held at the Congregational Church at Orland, Friday, March 12, Rev. John Humfreys, of Angola, officiating. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - We wish to thank all those who so kindly helped during his short illness and for the beautiful floral offerings.
