PUBLISHED IN THE STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, 07 AUG 1889 BENJAMIN CLARK, DIED 04 Aug 1889, age 78 years In the death of Benjamin Clark, of Albion, Mich., another old pioneer is gone. Mr. Clark died at his home August 4, 1889, aged 78 years. Many of the older residents of Steuben county will remember Mr. Clark as one of the early settlers, coming to Indiana in 1836, and locating near Flint, afterwards settling on the farm just south of Jackson Prairie, known in later years as the VanHusen farm. Removing to Albion in 1852, he has lived a long and useful life, being identified with the best interests of the community and a devoted member of the M.E. church. He leaves a large family and many friends to mourn his loss. Deceased was an uncle of O. I. Clark and Mrs. L. I. Matson, of Pleasant Lake. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Benjamin Clark died 04 Aug 1889, age 78 years, in Albion, Calhoun County, Mi. He was an uncle of Omar I. Clark, born 25 Jul 1832 in Ontario County, N. Y.; died 11 Sep 1895. Omar was a son of Dr. Alonzo P. Clark, 23 Dec 1807 - 03 Feb 1867, and Betsey (Bump) Clark, 14 Jan 1808 - 26 Mar 1878. Dr. Alonzo and Betsey Clark are buried at Clark Cemetery, Steuben County, IN. NOTE: Alonzo P. Clark married Betsey Bump at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gideon Bump in Smithfield Township, Madison County, N.Y. on 11 Oct 1828. Omar is buried with his 1st wife, Frances A. (Goldsmith) Clark, 20 Dec 1834 - 22 Dec 1883, whom he married on 04 May 1854. She was the daughter of Harvey H. Goldsmith who died 15 Oct 1869, age 60 y. 8m. 21d. and Phebe Ann (Sears) Goldsmith, 08 May 1806 - 14 Apr 1881. Omar's 2nd wife . Emma Josephine (Goldsmith) Brown Clark, died 24 Dec 1908, age 65 years, was a sister to his 1st wife and was previously married on 15 Nov 1866 to German "Germ" Brown, 10 Dec 1830 - 05 Aug 1878, beside whom she is buried at Circle Hill Cemetery, Angola, Steuben County, IN. Benjamin Clark was also an uncle to Orcelia R. (Clark) Matson, 01 Mar 1845 - 29 Jan 1906, who, on 04 Mary 1867, married Lewis I. Matson, born in 1844, no date of death. ON 12 Aug 1906, Lewis married his 1st wife's sister, Ada Josephine (Clark) Shackford Matson, 12 Aug 1858 - 26 Mar 1926. Ada Josephine is buried by her 1st husband in Toledo, Ohio, Charles Albert Shackford whom she married 04 May 1876. He died 08 Dec 1903. Clark and Betsey (Bump) Clark; "Infant" Clark, no name, date or age, another child of Dr. Alonzo P. Clark and Betsey (Bump) Clark.
