STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 29, 1903, page 4, column 5 CALEB CLARK, 04 Dec 1838 - 20 Apr 1903 DIED at his home in Montpelier, Ohio, April 20, 1903, Caleb Clark, aged 64 years, 4 months and 16 days. Deceased was born in Parks, Stark county, Ohio, and when thirteen years of age came with his widowed mother to Steuben county settling near Hudson where he grew to manhood, and moved to Montpelier in August, 1881. On Nov. 22, 1863, he was united in marriage with Matilda Kogin and to the union were born four daughters, two of whom died in early childhood. On Sept. 25, 1861, he enlisted in Co. K, 44th Indiana Regiment, and served until he was honorably discharged for disability, at Murfreesborro, April 29, 1863. During his enlistment he participated in eight hard battles. After the battle of Perrysville a comrade, Philip Parnell, became suddenly ill and was unable to keep up with the company. Mr. Clark would not desert him although his friends pleaded that there was no necessity of endangering the lives of them both, as the enemy was hot in their pursuit, and begged him to take safety in flight. This he refused to do, and his quick eyes soon discovered a cave into which he dragged his friend more dead than alive and did all he could to relieve his suffering while the enemy passed them. They remained there until Parnell was able to travel, when they joined their company who supposed they had been taken prisoner. He had the interest of the G. A. R. truly at heart and greatly enjoyed the meetings with the old boys. ADDITONAL INFORMATION; Caleb Clark, 04 Dec 1838 - 20 Apr 1903, married Matilda Kogin/Cogen, 23 Jun 1843 - 02 Jun 1903.
