STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 17, 1903, page 1, column 5 MATILDA (COGEN) CLARK, 23 Jun 1843 - 02 Jun 1903 Matilda Cogen, daughter of Daniel and Anna Cogen, was born in Tuscarawas county, Ohio, June 23, 1843, and died at her home in Montpelier, Jun 2, 1903, aged 59 years, 11 months and 9 days. In 1852, she came with her parents to Steuben county, Indiana, where she grew to young womanhood and spent the greater portion of her life, having come to Montpelier in August, 1881, where she has since resided. On November 22, 1863, she was united in marriage to Caleb Clark, who had preceded her to the better world about six weeks before, on April the 20th. To this union were born four daughters, two of whom died in early childhood. The two surviving ones are Mrs. Cora Forest and Miss Edna Clark. Mrs. Clark was one of a family of six children, only two of whom are now living, Mrs. Mary A. Teeters, of Hudson, Indiana, and Mrs. Sarah Willington, of New London, Iowa. Those going before were John Cogen, who died near Metz, Indiana, in 1880; Mrs. Elizabeth Shipe, who died near Hudson, Indiana, in 18?5, and Allen Cogen, who expired in Steubenville, Indiana, in 1902. Mrs. Clark was a loving wife and ideal mother, always ready to sacrifice for those who were dear to her. She had an attractive and winning manner, making a friend in all who knew her. She bore her long illness with marvelous patience and cheerfulness, always hopeful and looking on the bright side. Her loss leaves a vacancy that can never be filled, but to our sorrow comes the consoling thought that she is at rest and safe.
