STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 22, 1903, page 1, column 6 PHILO CLARK, 15 Jan 1815 - 11 Mar 1903 PHILO CLARK The subject of the above sketch was well known to the early settlers of this county and kept up the acquaintance by frequently attending the annual meetings of the Old Settlers. He was born Jan. 15, 1815, in Eaton, Madison county, N. Y. His people were Massachusetts people and he took great pleasure in the fact that he could trace his ancestors back to the Winslows of the first years of the Plymouth colony. He married Elizabeth Fitzgerald in Ontario county, N. Y., in 1841. They immediately settled in Steuben county, he having lived here since 1836. In 1864 they moved to Albion, Michigan, where they resided until the death of Mrs. Clark in 1894, and in May, 1896, he went to live with his son, R. E. Clark, in Chicago, where he died March 11th, 1903. Mr. Clark occupied more than an ordinary position among the people of Steuben county. He held many township and county offices, and in 1858 was elected a member of the legislature, and served faithfully and well. He enjoyed the perfect confidence and esteem of a very wide circle of friends and acquaintances. Both Mr. and Mrs. Clark were identified with the Christian church. Mr. Clark has, not withstanding his advanced age, being over eighty-eight years old, enjoyed exceptional good health, often saying he had no aches or pains. During the past winter he showed many evidences of loss of strength of mind and body without any decided sickness except such as often comes with advanced years. His remains were taken to Albion for burial. (Picture included with obituary) ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: 1880 U. S.
