KAY LASH COLLECTION, CARNEGIE PUBLIC LIBRARY, ANGOLA, STEUBEN COUNTY, INDIANA GEORGE DAVID CLEAVELAND, 19 NOV 1842 - 05 JUN 1909 GEORGE DAVID CLEAVELAND Was born in LaGrange county, Ind., Nov. 19, 1842, and early in the evening of June 5, 1909, entered into rest, at the age of 66 years, 6 months and 16 days. He came to this county in 1844 where he lived when he volunteered for the war for the Union, enlisting at Angola, Ind., Aug. 16, 1861, at the age of nineteen years, in Co. A. 29th Ind., V. I. 2nd division, 14th Army Corps. He was in the hospital at Louisville about one month with lung fever. He fought at Shiloh, Corinth, Stone River, Liberty Gap, Chickamauga. He was detailed at Chickamauga to carry wounded from the field, where he was captured, taken to Tunnel Hill through Atlanta to Richmond, then Danville, Andersonville, Charleston and Florence, held prisoner for 17 months and 10 days. On March 1, 1865, he was sent home and discharged at Indianapolis. May 17, 1865, he became a member of Crosswait Post No. 150 G. A. R. On June 28, 1866, he was married to Nancy J. Kirkland of this county. To this union were born six children, one daughter Kitty dying in infancy. Mrs. Ed Johns, Mrs. George Emerson, and Mrs. Roy Roberts, all of Flint, J. W. Cleaveland, of Milwaukee, Wis., A. C. Cleaveland, of Kendallville, Ind., together with the wife and mother, constitute the remaining members of the sorrowing family circle. Mr. Cleaveland spent practically his entire life in this community. Here he has been a familiar and respected figure. Funeral services were held at Flint, conducted by Elder Vernon Stauffer. (Kirkland) Cleaveland, born in 1845, no date of death. They were buried at Flint Cemetery, Steuben County, IN. She was the daughter of James Kirkland who died 04 Feb 1876, age 57 years, 10 months and 25 days, and his wife Angeline (________) Kirkland, 18 Apr 1826 - 20 Apr 1865. James Kirkland's 2nd wife was Charity (Laubach) Kirkland who was born 15 Jun 1834 and died 27 Dec 1875. They are buried at Flint Cemetery. George David Cleaveland's 2nd wife was a sister of Dr. George W. McConnell. George David Cleaveland's father was David Hawkes Cleaveland, born 01 Jun 1816 in Skaneateles, Onondaga County, N. Y., died 23 Aug 1849 in Flint, Steuben County, IN. On 26 Nov 1837 in LaGrange, IN, David married Eliza/Elizabeth (Littlefield) Cleaveland, 09 Feb 1812 - 15 Oct 1887. On 24 Nov 1850 she married her 2nd husband, Jason Dove, who died 23 Jan 1866, age 48 years, 7 months and 20 days. On 05 Oct 1843, Jason married his 1st wife, Emma A. (Griffin) Dove, 12 Jul 1824 - 21 Apr 1850. They are buried at Flint Cemetery. CHILDREN OF THE MARRIAGE OF GEORGE DAVID CLEAVELAND AND NANCY (KIRKLAND) CLEAVELAND: KITTY M. CLEAVELAND, 24 Aug 1868 - 05 Sep 1868, age 12 days. MRS. ED JOHNS, Flint, IN, was still living when her father died. IONA/ONA M. (CLEAVELAND) EMERSON, 1871 - 1929, on Jul 1868, married George M. Emerson, 07 Jul 1868 - 10 Mar 1948, son of Avery Emerson Jr., 21 Jan 1827 -24 Mar 1894, and Elizabeth S. (Parsell) Emerson, 24 Jul 1833 - 11 Apr 1915. They are all buried at Block Cemetery, Steuben County, IN. Audrey Seibel Lewis' Cemetery Book, Vol. 1, page 571, had a note that Iona committed suicide by hanging. INA D. (CLEAVELAND) ROBERTS, 2_ Dec 1882 - 03 Jul 1924, married Roy Roberts, 14 Feb 1878 - 15 Jun 1949, son of Ziba Roberts, 10 Aug 1838 - 17 Dec 1904; who, on 07 Oct 1859, married Louisa (Collins) Roberts, 1839 - 1916, daughter of Truman and Francis (cemetery book spelling) H. (______) Collins, no date of birth or death. The Roberts are buried at Jackson Prairie Cemetery, Orland, Steuben County, IN. Francis Collins is buried at Lake Gage Cemetery, Steuben County, IN. No information on burial place for Truman Collins. J. W. CLEAVELAND lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, at the time of his father's death. A. C. CLEAVELAND lived in Kendalville, IN, at the time of his father's death. SIBLINGS OF GEORGE DAVID CLEAVELAND: OSMER W. CLEAVELAND, died 31 Jan 1866, age 27 years, 2 months and 4 days. EMILY A.
