STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 4, 1905, p.1, c.5 ELIZA (PHENECIE) COLE, 27 Jan 1834 - 29 Dec 1904 MRS. NELSON COLE Eliza Phenecie, daughter of G. W. and Mary Ann Phenicie, pioneers of Scott township, was born in Bedford county, Pennsylvania, on Jan. 27, 1834, and died at her home in Scott township, Steuben county, Ind., Dec. 29, 1904, aged 70 years, 11 months and 2 days. Deceased with her parents moved to the state of Ohio when she was three years old and in 1850 she came to Steuben county. On Feb. 16, 1860, she was united in marriage with Nelson Cole, who died on Jan. 4, 1901. To this union were born four children, one dying in infancy. Three sons survive her, Sherman, Frank and George. For three years she lived alone her husband being a member of the 74th Ind. Vols. She leaves to mourn their loss, three sons, four brothers, six grandchildren, five sisters and a host of relatives. She was a member of the Christian church for many years. She was a kind mother and a friend in sickness. The pall-bearers were members of her husband's regiment. Funeral services were held at the South Scott church Sunday afternoon, January 1, at 2 o'clock, conducted by Elder Vernon Stauffer. They are buried at South Scott Cemetery, Steuben County, Indiana. Eliza was the daughter of George W. and Mary Ann (Houck) Phenecie. Nelson was the son of Jacob W. Cole, 03 Mar 1812 - 03 Feb 1886, and Sarah (Geer) Cole, 26 Jul 1818 - 23 Sep 1886. They are buried at Circle Hill Cemetery, Angola, Steuben County, Indiana. CHILDREN OF ELIZA AND NELSON COLE: Samuel C. Cole, 05 Jul 1866 - 28 Dec 1866. Sherman O. Cole, 24 Sep 1867 - 1948, on 27 Nov 1890, married Mary Eliza (Dotts) Cole, 1870 - 1943. Frank J. Cole, 1869 - 1931, on 23 Apr 1892, married Edith (Berlien) Cole, 1870 - 1939. George Cole, 1870 - 1960, on 01 Mar 1899, married Jennie (Harmon) Cole, 11 Feb 1874 - May 1911. He married 2nd, Lulu May (Maugherman) Cole, 10 Apr 1885 - 1956. Jennie Harmon is listed several ways: Cemetery book, Jennie; Marriage License record, Steuben County, Indiana, Jane; Family Group Record, Clesta Jane. She was the daughter of William H. and Eliza (Teegardin) Harmon. All the children and their spouses are buried at South Scott Cemetery. SIBLINGS OF ELIZA: Josephine Phenecie, 26 Sep 1853 - 15 Aug 1858. Mary A. Phenecie, 06 Feb 1838 - 25 Mar 1850. They are buried at Kope Cemetery, Steuben County, Indiana. SIBLINGS OF NELSON COLE (all buried at Circle Hill Cemetery): Sgt. Samuel Cole, 10 Nov 1843 - 12 Dec 1864, died in Nashville, Tenn., of wounds received in battle at Jonesboro, Ga. Jacob C. Cole, 16 Feb 1848 - 11 Apr 1863. Major William H. Cole, 30 Sep 1841 - 17 Oct 1895, married Nettie A. (Gifford) Cole, 1844 - 1912, daughter of Amaniah and Rachel Jane (Beard) Cole. Major Cole served in the 129th Indiana Infantry. Capt. John Cole, 1845 - 1914, married Patience (Elliott) Ciole, 1839 - 1923. Capt. Cole served in the 129th Indiana Infantry.
