ANNAHRITTE (CHAFFEE) COLLINS, 02 Jan 1797 - 16 Jul 1882 COLLINS---DIED-In Jamestown township, July 16, 1882, Mrs. Barton Collins, aged 85 years, 6 months and 14 days. Mrs. Collins was born in Rhode Island, and was married in 1820. In the spring of 1835, she came to Jamestown township, being among the first settlers of the township. She was the mother of eleven children, several of whom are residents of the northern portion of the county. For several years past she has made her home with her son, G. W. Collins, about two miles west of Jamestown. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Annahritte (Chaffee) Collins was born in Rehoboth, Rhode Island, on 02 Jan 1797. In Ira, Rutland County, Vermont, in 1820, she married Barton Collins, born 23 Feb 1794, in Ira, Rutland County, Vermont, and he died 18 Jan 1849 in Jamestown Township, Steuben County, Indiana. They are buried in Jamestown Cemetery, Steuben County, Indiana. Barton is credited with being the first white settler in Jamestown Township, Steuben County, Indiana. Barton was the son of Nathan Collins, 24 Sep 1763 - 12 Jun 1847, who was born and buried in Ira, Rutland County, Vermont, and Kesiah (Carpenter) Collins, 22 Apr 1767 - 18 Dec 1845. Kesiah is probably buried with him. CHILDREN OF THE MARRIAGE OF BARTON AND ANNAHRITTE: Julia (Collins) Salisbury, 24 Aug 1821 - 12 Apr 1877, on 20 Mar 1838, married Chester Derby Salisbury, 10 Feb 1818 - 28 Aug 1897. They are buried at Jamestown Cemetery. Chester was the son of Abner Salisbury, 06 Jun 1794 - 26 May 1826, and Susan (Gore) Salisbury, 1790 - 1856. On 01 Jul 1881, Chester married his 2nd wife, Abigail Spring, no other information. In Aug 1885, he married his 3rd wife, Hattie Shanklin, no other information. Viola K. (Collins) Hastings, 10 Nov 1822 - 19 Feb 1888, on 04 Apr 1844, married Moses S. Hastings, 12 Dec 1823(?) - 30 Jan 1888. They are buried at Jamestown Cemetery. Thirza/Thursa F. (Collins) Mallory, 23 Apr 1824 - 28 Nov 1852, on 05 Dec 1844, married Clayton Mallory (his 1st wife), 28 Jul 1816 - 05 May 1903. Clayton was the son of David Mallory, 14 Feb 1794 - 14 Oct 1864, and Cynthia (Collins) Mallory, 30 Nov 1790 - 20 Oct 1868. Cynthia was a sister of Barton Collins. Clayton's 2nd wife, Jane (Collins) Mallory, was a sister of his 1st wife. They are all buried at Jamestown Cemetery. Sarah (Collins) Collins, 04 Oct 1825 - 21 Dec 1875, in 1855 in North Craftsbury, Orleans County, Vermont, married her cousin, Aaron Collins, 16 Dec 1831/1832 - 22 Jun 1898, son of Nathan Collins born 17 May 1792, and Sally (Carpenter) Collins. Jane (Collins) Mallory, 23 Jun 1827 - 30 Aug 1883, on 29 Dec 1853, married her brother-in-law, Clayton Mallory, 28 Jul 1816 - 05 May 1903. They are buried at Jamestown Cemetery. George W. Collins, 17 Jan 1829 - 17 Oct 1912, on 17 Jan 1856, married Avis (Walter) Collins, 06 Nov 1839 - 1913. They are buried at Jamestown Cemetery. Harriett (Collins) Saxton, 18 Jan 1831 - 11 Dec 1908, on 15 Nov 1855, married Ebenezer B. Saxton, 21 Aug 1833 - 19 Feb 1907. They died in Coldwater, Branch County, Michigan. Benjamin Collins, 05 Feb 1833 - 09 Feb 1855, buried at Jamestown Cemetery. William W. Collins, 29 Jan 1835 - 09 Aug 1867, married Hattie (Smith) Collins. He is buried at Jamestown Cemetery. Fidelia/Phidella (Collins) Seeley, 11 Feb 1837 - 05 Mar 1909, on 25 Oct 1856 in Steuben County, Indiana, married Louis Seeley, 08 Jun 1830 - 22 May 1891. Charles Harvey Collins, 10 Apr 1839 - 17 Nov 1896, on 27 Jul 1871, near Kinderhook, Michigan, married Lucy C. (Carroll) Collins, 03 Aug 1844 - 18 Dec 1915. Lucy was the daughter of Edward Carroll, 10 Jan 1810 - 08 Aug 1887, and Jane (Bonney) Carroll, 22 Feb 1807 - 17 Dec 1871. They are all buried at Jamestown Cemetery. BIOGRAPHY OF BARTON COLLINS FROM THE KAY LASH COLLECTION, CARNEGIE PUBLIC LIBRARY OF STEUBEN COUNTY, ANGOLA, INDIANA. BARTON COLLINS (23 Feb 1794 - 18 Jan 1849) One of the pioneers of Jamestown Township, Barton Collins was born on February 23, 1794, in Ira, Richland County, Vermont. He was married in 1820. Collins came West in 1834 but did not enter any land at that time. In the spring of 1835, he sold his land in the East and stared again with his family consisting of himself, wife and nine children, six daughters and three sons. He sent his goods by water to Detroit and he came by land with his team. They were three weeks on the road. At Buffalo they took the boat to Detroit and came from there to Coldwater (Mich.). At that time Coldwater had only one log house. From there they went on to Bronson (Mich.), which consisted of two log cabins joined together which served as a hotel. After a few days in the Vermont settlement (Orland) he settled in Jamestown Township on land he entered in Fort Wayne, paying $1.25 per acre. The Collins family had 11 children; Julia (C. D. Salisbury); Viola (Moses Hastings); Thirza (Clayton Mallory); Sara (Aaron Collins); Jane (Clayton Mallory); George (Avis Walter); Harriette (E. B. Saxton); Benjamin; William W. (Hattie Smith); Phildella (Louis Seeley) and Charles (Lucy Carroll). Their first cabin was built near where the house of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Gleason now live on 120. Charles Collins had six children: Lynn, Florence, Alice (Harry Wilder); Fred; Walter and Frank. Many of this area can trace their family back to the Collins line. Nathan Collins Jr., 17 May 1792 - 23 Jan 1887, in 1813 or 1816, married Sally (Carpenter) Collins of Craftsburg, Vermont, born about 1794 as she was 86 in the 1880 United States census listing them living with their son, Aaron C. Collins and his family. Prudence Collins, 23 Nov 1795 - Sep 1797. Harvey Collins, 05 Oct 1797/98 - 27 Sep 1838, on 04 Mar 1824, married Philura (Leffingwell) Collins, born 30 Jan 1806 in Middletown Springs, Rutland County, Vermont. She was the daughter of Dyar and Hannah (Waterman) Leffingwell. Minerva Collins, born 11 Sep 1799. Asa Collins, 22 Jul 1801 - 22 Feb 1882, on 19 Oct 1824 in Clarenden, Rutland County, Vermont, married Orpha (Wyman) Collins, 20 Nov 1804 - 06 Jan 1899. Amanda Collins, 22 Dec 1803 - 07 May 1844.
