KAY LASH COLLECTION, CARNEGIE PUBLIC LIBRARY OF STEUBEN COUNTY, ANGOLA, INDIANA. GEORGE WASHINGTON COLLINS, 17 Jan 1829 - 17 Oct 1912 GEORGE W. COLLINS Was born in Rutland, Vermont, in 1829. In 1835 he came with his parents to Steuben county, Indiana, and his father made one of the first entries in the township. His early schooling was limited to but three months in the year in the log cabin school houses of his day. His father died when he was twelve years of age, leaving him to assist his mother in the care of a large family consisting of four boys and seven girls, he being the oldest. The others have all preceded him to the land of rest. In 1856 he was married to Avis Walter, of Steuben county. To this union were born five children, all of whom are living and with the exception of one were with him at the time of his death. Of his character it can be said he lived an exemplary life, ever ready and willing to help where help was needed. In 1906 he was stricken with paralysis, since which time he has been unable to take any part in the activities of life.
