STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 20, 1883, p.8, c.4 AMBROSE CORY SR., 19 Jul 1813 - 11 Jun 1883 DIED Cory---At his residence in Jamestown township, June 11, 1883, Ambrose Cory, aged 69 years, 10 months and 22 days. The deceased was born in Jefferson county, N.Y., July 19, 1813. In 1827 he moved with his parents to St. Lawrence county. While a young man he united with the Baptist church. On May 11, 1837, he married Eliza E. Munn. Ten children were born to them, nine sons and one daughter. One son died in infancy and the rest survive him. In 1847 he moved with his family to Chester, Ohio, and two years later to Farmer, Defiance county, he being one of the first settlers of that section and endured all the privations and hardships that fell to the lot of pioneers. Although always afflicted with asthma from childhood he was of an ambitious nature and many times worked beyond his strength. In 1864 he removed to Jamestown township, this county, where he ever after resided. The funeral occurred on the 13th from his late residence, being conducted by Rev. W. A. Kingsbury, of Kinderhook. All his children were present with the exception of two sons who live in the west. He was a kind and affectionate husband, a loving father and a kind neighbor and his death will be sincerely mourned by a large circle of friends. CHILDREN: Charles Henry Cory, 13 Dec 1843 - 12 Mar 1927, in 1871, married Sarah Lamira (Reed) Cory, 1854 - 1941. They are buried at Jamestown Cemetery. Sarah was the daughter of William and Rachel Reed. Edward Cory. Myron Cory. Lucinda Cory. Melvin Cory. Ambrose Cory Jr. age 28 and his wife, Minerva Cory, age 20, are listed in the home with Ambrose and Eliza in the 1880 United States census. Orley Cory, 1854 - 1908, is buried at Jamestown Cemetery. John Franklin Cory, 06 Jul 1857 - 13 Apr 1915, married S. Etta (Friday) Cory, 1863 - 1932. They are buried at Jamestown Cemetery. Nathan Cory.
