STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 24, 1900, pg. 1, col.1 ALMIRA G. (MARR) GATEHOUSE CUTLER NISONGER COX, 15 Mar 1842 - 15 Jan 1900. Almira Marr was born in Cartwright township, Upper Canada, March 15th, 1842, and removed with her parents to Steuben county in 1857. She was united in marriage to Isaac (Israel in cemetery book) Gatehouse, Oct. 19, 1859. In the spring of 1862 he enlisted in the 4th Michigan cavalry and like many others laid down his life in defense of his country leaving her with a boy three years of age. March 4, 1866 she was married to Hiram H. Cutler and to them was born a daughter. Sept. 8, 1871, he died of consumption, and in a few months death again visited her home, taking from her, her little son. September 29, 1872, she was married to Ayres Nisonger and to them was born a daughter. In 1879 they emigrated to Nebraska, where they endured many hardships as pioneers. For twenty years she lived there and saw that beautiful country grow into a rich agricultural region. In the spring of 1882 she was again united in marriage to Adam Cox, they remaining on the farm until twelve years ago, when she removed to Battle Creek, Nebraska, where she lived until her return to Steuben county last July, her husband having died in the fall of 1897. She united with the M. E. church in 1890 and since then has put her faith in God and died an earnest, consistent christian woman. She contracted her death by running a nail in her hand while building the morning fire. She took cold and blood poisoning set in and for seventy days she suffered beyond expression, when the death angel beckoned and she was called to that home where pain and sorrow are unknown. She never forgot those in trouble and sickness and always lent a helping hand to those in need. No stranger in want was ever turned from her door. She leaves two daughters and a grandchild. Mrs. Gosson and little daughter who came with her from Nebraska to make her home here, and Mrs. Licey, whose home was at River Styx, O., but came here to make her mother an extended visit, are left to mourn the loss of a good mother.
