STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, MAY 15, 1901, pg. 1, col. 6 ELI D. COX, 20 Mar 1825 - 03 May 1901 Eli D. Cox was born in Sugar Creek township, Wayne county, Ohio, March 20, 1825, and died May 3, 1901, aged 76 years, 1 month and 13 days. February 10, 1848, he was united in marriage to Sarah Ann Tanner, who died April 14, 1851, and after two years he was united in marriage to Margaret Eckert, Feb. 27, 1853. To this union were born nine children, five sons and four daughters, of whom four sons and three daughters survive him. He lived in Dalton, Ohio, until 1855 and then with his wife and one child moved to DeKalb county, Indiana, where they lived three years. In March, 1858, he moved to the farm in Steuben county where he lived for thirty six years, when he moved to Hudson, remaining there until his death. He united with the Baptist church in 1844, at the age of nineteen and remained a consistent member until called to his reward. He was a kind husband and father and tried to rear his family in the fear of God. He was generous and always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. He leaves a wife, four sons, three daughters, six grandchildren, three brothers, two sisters and a host of friends to mourn their loss. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. M. Kendall in the church at Fairfield Center, and the remains were laid to rest in the cemetery near by. (Picture included with obit) ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Eli D. Cox, 20 Mar 1825 - 03 May 1901, married first on 10 Feb 1848 to Sarah Ann Tanner who died 14 Apr 1851, probably buried in Dalton, Ohio. On 27 Feb 1853, he married Margaret (Eckert/Eckard) Cox, 1830 - 1913. They are not listed in "Cemeteries of Steuben County, Indiana, 1990" by Audree Siebel Lewis nor are their children. Steuben County Genealogical Society Quarterly, Vol. 7, No. 1, page 6, Spring 2001, in Past Town News from the Steuben Republican Newspaper, 05 Jun 1901, is printed, "Hudson - Mrs. Clinesmith of Chicago and Mrs. Clinesmith of Lincoln Center, Kansas, who were called here by the death of their father, Eli Cox, have all returned home."
