STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 23, 1904, page 1, columns 5, 6 OLIVER ASA CROCKETT, 04 Mar 1818 - 15 Mar 1904 Oliver Asa Crockett was born in Muskingum county, Ohio, March 4, 1818, and died in Angola, Ind., March 15, 1904; aged 86 years and 11 days. He was the eldest child of Asa and Myriam Crockett to whom twelve children were born. When he was five years old his parents moved to Seneca county, Ohio. The primeval forest was as yet scarcely disturbed and the Indians roamed at will over the wide domain. His childhood and youth were passed under circumstances common to the first settlers in this great and growing West. On May 11, 1842, he was united in marriage to Laura M. Scovel. To this marriage nine children were born, four of whom still survive: Mrs. Zella Sowle, Mrs. Cora Willis, Mrs. Eva Barnes and Mrs. Nellie Freygang. In June, 1859, Mr. Crockett moved to Steuben county, Ind., settling on a farm one and one-half miles west of Angola. In 1867 his first wife died leaving a family of small children. In 1868 he married Juliette Jeffords, who through all the years has made a home for him and a welcome place for the surviving children. In 1872 Mr. Crockett moved to Angola and engaged in business. At the age of seventy he retired and since that time has enjoyed the loving companionship of his wife and children. On the 13th of January, 1901, he united with the Congregational church. He was initiated in Angola Lodge No. 236 F. & A.M., Aug. 21, 1865, and raised to sublime degree of a Master Mason, Oct. 23, 1865. A summary or his life would be, the boy of the wilderness wood, the youth of the pioneer struggle, the farmer of the wrought-out civilization, the business man of the entangled and entangling life, the citizen honored for twenty one years by successive election to public office, the man through it all, struggling toward the solution of this strange existence, and finding it at last in Him who loved and served and suffered that we might have life and have it more abundantly. He leaves to mourn their loss his wife, four daughters, two brothers, two sisters, four grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral services were held in the Congregational church, Angola, Thursday afternoon, conducted by the Masonic Lodge, L. W. Fairfield, minister, officiating. Burial in Circle Hill.
