STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, MAY 11, 1904, page 1, column 5 CHARLES L. DARRAH, 1845 - 04 May 1904 Charles L. Darrah was born in Angola, Indiana, in 1845, his parents being pioneer residents of the town and once kept the old Eagle Hotel. Charles grew to manhood and followed the trade of paper hanger and painter. On Dec. 16th, 1863, he enlisted in Co. C. 12th Ind. Cavalry and was honorably discharged Nov. 10, 1865. Mustered in to G. A. R. Post No. 150, March 27, 1864, and was a member thereof for many years, withdrawing on his removal to Bronson, Mich., to make his home with his only sister, Mrs. George Robinson, where he died May 4th, 1904, aged 59 years. His many acquaintances remember his generous and open hearted deeds and gentlemanly ways when in upright manhood, though often brought low by ill advised friends, yet the faults were not of heart and should pass. We are thankful that for years he did resist temptations and for years was a respected citizen among us. This it is a pleasure to remember. On notification that his body would be brought to Angola for interment by the side of his parents a number of Army Comrades assembled at the grave with his Company Commander, Lieut. Lorenzo Taylor, who in a brief way gave testimony to his good character as a soldier. Rev. Wooten concluded the brief funeral service. The only living relatives present were Mrs. Robinson and her husband of Bronson, the other members of the family having all passed away. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: He was the son of Henry B. Darrah, 1813 - 20 Oct 1853, and Charlotte (______) Darrah, 30 Jan 1820 - 28 Dec 1888. They are all buried at Old Angola Cemetery, Angola, Steuben County, Indiana.
