STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, MAY 11, 1904, page 1, column 5 GEORGE FIEDLER, 05 Mar 1834 - 09 May 1904 George Fiedler was born in the little village of Wolkershof near Nuremberg, Germany, March 5, 1834. After attending school for seven years, as required by law, he learned the shoemaker trade, and in 1856, had to enter the German army. After his discharge, he enlisted for three years more, and on account of his excellent standing, was transferred to a regiment of Genadarmes, with which he served till May 9, 1863. He was soon thereafter married to Margaret Goetz, and to them were born four children, two of them dying in infancy in Germany, and the other two, Emma and Herman were born in Angola. He came to this county in 1867 and has lived here ever since. Mr. Fiedler was a fine gardener, and supported himself by raising vegetables during the summer seasons for many years. His planting was always done in certain signs of the moon, and whether his theory was correct or not, he always raised the best and the earliest of any one in that line. His death was sudden from heart disease on Monday evening, March 9, 1904 (has to be an error in the date), while all alone in his little cottage on East South street. Funeral services will be held today at the home of Lawrence Gates on South Wayne street, conducted by Frank D. Working, minister. ITEM #2, MAY 11, 1904, page 5, column 2 George Fiedler, an aged German, who had lived in Angola since 1867, was found dead yesterday morning in his little cottage on South street where he lived alone for many years. He had been troubled with heart disease for a long time and of late has worried much over the death of his son Herman who died April 3. He went home Monday evening about five o'clock, feeling poorly. He sat in his door way for perhaps half an hour, then laid down on the bed without undressing. Fred Emerson's little boy looked in at the half open door and saw him on the bed, but thinking he was asleep, said nothing about it, as he was accustomed to seeing him in this way. The neighbors found him yesterday morning a little before 6 o'clock in the same position the boy had seen him the evening before. He had probably died soon after lying down. Mr. Fiedler was peculiar in many ways and quite superstitious. Years ago he had his fortune told by a Gypsy, and he said every prediction the woman made had come true except the year of his death, and that was to be in 1904. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: George Fiedler, 05 Mar 1834 - 09 May 1904, married Margaret (Goetz), 1841 - 1918. Daughter, Emma Fiedler, 1868 - 1946. Son, Herman Fiedler, 1878 - 03 Apr 1904. The 2nd article stated that Mr. Fiedler had lived alone in his little cottage for many years but the entire family is buried in the same plot at Circle Hill Cemetery, Angola, Steuben County, Indiana, Section 12, Lot 21. The funeral was held at the home of Lawrence Gates with the name "Gates" being a corruption of the German name, Goetz. He was also born in Germany and was possibly a brother or cousin of Margaret. He is listed in the cemetery book on page 700 as Capt. Lawrence Gates, 25 Apr 1839 - 29 Dec 1922. He is also buried at Circle Hill Cemetery.
