STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 19, 1899, page 1, column 6 DAVID FOX, 03 Jun 1813 - 11 Apr 1899 DIED at the home of his son, south of Orland, Steuben county, Indiana, April 11, 1899, David Fox, aged 85 years, 10 months and 8 days. Deceased was born in Hadley, Hampshire county, Mass., June 3, 1813, and belonged to a family of twelve children, of whom but two brothers survive- -J. A. Fox, of Lemoore, Cal., and J. A. Fox, of Fremont, Ind. In 1836 he was married to Sophronia Osborn, and in 1838 they came to Steuben county and located about two miles southeast of Orland. They were pioneers and the story of the pioneer of Steuben county is one of hardship. They had the red men for neighbors, but their dealings with them were always friendly because prompted by honest motives. To the home were born four children-Joel A., John E., Ella M. and Horace G. Thirteen years ago the dear companion answered the summons of her Maker, and the two eldest sons have also passed into the silent beyond. In his young manhood the deceased united with the Methodist church and remained a devoted member throughout his life. The funeral was held in the M. E. Church, Orland, Friday, April 14, Rev. Weaver conducing the services. Interment was in Green Lawn cemetery. His surviving children, nine grandchildren and one great- grandchild, also his brother, J. A. Fox, of Fremont, were present with the other relatives and friends who had gathered out of respect to his memory. David Fox was a true man, measured by the highest christian standard. During a previous illness he had selected the text from which his funeral discourse was preached, (II Tim. 4, 7, and 8,) and in the words of this text it may truly be said of him, "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, and am ready `to enter the golden gate,' and abide with the King forever." All that was earthly of Uncle David, as he was familiarly called, was lain away, but "the pure spirit is resting with God."
