STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 1903, page 1, column 6 MARTHA (LOWER) FREED, 25 May 1825 - 09 Sep 1903 Martha Freed was born at Chambersburg, Columbiana county, Ohio, May 25, 1825, and died Sept. 9, 1903, at the ripe old age of 78 years, 3 months and 15 days. At the age of 22, she became the wife of Peter Freed, and removed with him to DeKalb county, this state, in 1852, where they remained until 17 years ago when they came to Steuben county, which has since been their home until her recent death. To the before named union there were born seven children, 4 daughters and 3 sons. Of these, 3 daughters survive: Mrs. Mattie VanAuken, Chicago; Angeline, wife of Hampton Miller, Angola, and Sarah, wife of R. T. Dunkin, Ashley. There are five grandchildren and one great grandchild. Born of Dutch Lutheran parents, she was reared in this faith, and although not a member of a church after coming to Indiana, she was always ready to witness by word of her trust in Him to whom we hope to go. She was a true, devoted wife, a sacrificing, loving mother, a kind helpful neighbor, and a sympathetic faithful friend. During her recent illness of several weeks, she suffered greatly, but was patient, many times reasserting her faith in God and expressing her willingness to go to Him. Her sympathy and a solicitude for others were expressed in her wakeful hours by faithful inquiry concerning their health, even to the last. Mother Freed, loved by all and missed by those who knew her best, closed her eyes in sleep, and while she slept was kissed by Death and shall we trust awake to be with God.
