STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 28, 1903, page 6, column 2 JEFFERSON L. FRIEND, 29 Nov 1840- 20 Jan 1903 Jefferson L. Friend was born at Paris, Stark county, Ohio, Nov. 29, 1840, and died Jan. 20, at Orland, Ind. At the age of 16, he with his parents moved to Williams county, Ohio. While living in Williams county his occupation was farm work, and by diligent application to his studies while attending the district school, he was able to procure a license and taught several terms of school. He then attended the High school at Orland, paying part of his tuition and board by working out of school hours on the same farm he owned at his death. In October, 1864, he enlisted in the 14th Michigan, and served with credit to himself and his country until the close of the war. After returning from the army he devoted himself to teaching. He then entered Eastman's business college at Chicago, but on account of ill health he gave up his school and came home. October 17, 1866, he was married to Nancy Chapin Kidder. After his marriage, he taught three terms of school, two at Columbus, Ohio, and one in Indiana. He then devoted himself to farming. His first farm was in Michigan. In a few years he sold this and purchased a farm just north of Orland, and by strict energy and economy he earned himself a fine home, but, alas, the brittle thread of life was snapped asunder. He leaves a wife, two sons, three daughters, three brothers and four sisters to mourn his departure. Mr. Friend was a devoted husband, a kind father, an honest and upright citizen, and his friends and neighbors deeply sympathize with the family in their sad loss. Funeral took place in the home, Thursday, Jan. 22(?), at 1 o'clock p.m., Rev. Preston of Ontario, officiating. Burial in Green Lawn Cemetery. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Jefferson L.
