Steuben-Republican 8 August 1906 P. 4 William Sylvester Gilbert was born in Portage County, Ohio, September 22, 1836, and died at his home near Metz August 5, 1906 , age 69 years 10 months and 11 days. He removed to this county in 1851 and has been a resident ever since. He was married to Miss Harriet Case February 27, 1862 and to this union were born three children. Clarence having preceded him to the great beyond. His illness was of short duration and those who cared for him had hopes of his recovery until within the last few days. Everything was done for him that could be done to ease him but to no avail and his suffering was most intense. He leaves a wife and one son, Hugh Gilbert and one daughter, Mrs. Dora Chisholm and a host of friends to mourn their loss. He was ever thoughtful and caring for the welfare of others. In his death the community loses one of its most honored citizens, the Fraternity one of its faithful members and the home its mainstay. But through all we have to submit to him who doeth all things well. Funeral services were held at his late home Sunday afternoon under the auspices of Knights Templar.
