STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1903, page 3, column 3 JOSEPH L. HAGERTY, M.D., 11 Nov 1835 - 24 Sep 1903 Dr. Joseph L. Hagerty, who departed this life Sept. 24, 1903, was born in Washington Co., Penn., Nov. 11, 1835. He spent his boyhood in Ohio where he was married to Miss Lydia C. Ayers, Oct. 24, 1858. To this union was born one son, Acton E., who died in 1882, soon after which they adopted a daughter, Miss Minetta Loop, who has been a great comfort to the doctor and his wife in the years of his failing health. At an early age he began the study of medicine at Ann Arbor college. At the nation's call in 1861, he left his studies to serve his country, enlisting in Co. H., 38th Ohio infantry. After the war he resumed his studies graduating from Rush Medical College, Chicago, in 1870, and began the practice of medicine at Jamestown, Ind., but shortly after moved to Fremont where he remained till 1889, when he retired from the practice and removed with his family to Denver, Col., engaging in the real-estate business. Six years later he moved to Topeka, Kan., where he lived till the time of his death. For the past eight years he has been in poor health, growing more and more feeble as the years passed. In his life he had taken several post-graduate courses, and even in the years of failing strength he manifested great interest in his favorite study. For many years he had been a member of the Masonic Lodge and had taken the Knights Templar degree in 1885. He was of sturdy Scotch ancestry, being possessed of that indomitable will and courage which characterize that nationality and added to this he had a heart touched with quickest sympathy at sight of suffering whether in man or beast. And during his later years when he could no longer go out to administer to the wants of those in distress he turned none from his door, who came seeking aid when he could give it. He leaves a wife, two brothers, Dr. Blair and Spencer Hagerty, of Montpelier, Ohio, two sisters, Mrs. Wm. Knour of Montpelier, and Mrs. Louis Briton of Hillsdale, Mich., to mourn their loss. The funeral services were held in the M. E. church at Fremont, Sunday at 10:30 a.m., Rev. Dyer officiating. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Dr. Joseph L. Hagerty, 11 Nov 1835 - 24 Sep 1903, married Lydia C.
