STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, MAY 13, 1903, page 8, column 2 MARIA (C0LE) HANDY, 03 Apr 1820 - 05 May 1903 Maria Cole was born in Ovid, Seneca coungty, N.Y., April 3, 1820. Early in life she moved with her parents to Greece, Monroe county, of the same state. Jan. 1, 1844, she was married to Cyrus Handy. To this union were born six children, three sons and three daughters, three of whom and her husband preceded her to the spirit world. The living are Homer Handy, of Fremont, Mich., Hiram Handy, of Clear Lake, Indiana, and Mrs. A. B. Ransom of Algansee, Mich., with whom she made her home until her death which occurred May 5, 1893 (see note below), making her 83 yrs., 1 mo. and 2 days old. At the age of about twenty she joined the Regular Baptist church of the town of Greece, and remained in this faith until her death. Sept. 20, 1846, she with her husband moved to Steuben county, Ind., and settled in York township in the spring of 1847, after which they again moved to Ray. Upon the organization of the Baptist church at Clear Lake she became a member, and was, when possible, always in her place. About eight years ago she removed her standing to the Algansee Baptist church of which she was a member at the time of her death. She was unassuming in her ways, a faithful companion, a kind and loving mother, a wise counsellor and well may her children rise up and call her blessed. Funeral services were held at the R. P. church at Ray, Friday, May 8, conducted by Rev. Cutler, of Kinderhook. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The birth and death dates in the obituary do not agree. This obituary was copied from the 13 May 1903 edition, therefore her date of death must be 05 May 1903, not 1893. With this corrected date of death, the birth date and the age she attained in her life, as stated in the obituary, would agree. The church where the funeral services were held is stated as R. P., possibly an error, referring to "Ray Baptist" church? There are two listings for Hiram Handy in the "Cemeteries of Steuben County, Indiana, 1990" by Audree Siebel Lewis but neither one refers to his parents to designate which one would be correct.
