STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 4, 1899, pg. 1, col. 6 Sanford Hastings, 19 May 1817 - 13 Dec 1898 At his home in DeWitt, Clinton Co, Iowa, Dec. 13, 1898, Sanford Hastings, aged 81 years, 9 months and 26 days. Deceased was born in Wilmington, Vermont, May 19, 1817, and in 1838, when 21 years of age moved to Jackson township, Steuben county. Feb. 3, 1843, he was joined in marriage with Eunice Murray, and resided near Lake Gage until April 13. 1865, and then moved to Iowa. Three children were born to them, Maria M, Lorenzo S., and (1st name illegible) M., the last two surviving him. A brother of the deceased, Edson G. Hastings, lives at Des Moines, Iowa, and a sister, Mrs. Mary Sherwood, near Angola. As will be seen by the date of his arrival here, Mr. Hastings was a pioneer of Steuben county and while here cleared up a farm near Lake Gage.
