STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 22, 1880, p.8, c.3 FRANCES C. (JAGGER) HATHAWAY, 29 Oct 1820 - 16 Dec 1880 Died in York township, Dec. 16, 1880, of typhoid pneumonia, Mrs. H. P. Hathaway, wife of Deputy Sheriff Hathaway, aged 60 years and 18 days. Mrs. Hathaway was born in Mendon, Morris county, N. J. At the age of four years she moved with her parents to Licking county, O., where she lived until her marriage, June 23, 1845. In the fall of 1848, they settled in this county, a young and happy couple, and have lived in this county ever since. She was ever an extremely affectionate wife and mother. Her strongest efforts were looking toward the welfare of her children. Her greatest joy was their happiness. She ever led an exemplary christian life, and died rejoicing in the atoning power of the Saviour. She was the mother of six children, all living to mourn her death, and deeply they feel the loss. She had long been a resident of this place prior to moving to Angola. A few weeks ago she came to care for her son's wife who was sick; was soon taken sick herself, and here found a resting place. Services at the church, Rev. Holdstock, of Angola, officiating. She was followed to her grave by a large concourse of friends and relatives ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Frances C. He was the son of Dr. David P. Hathaway, 04 Nov 1791 - 11 May 1850, and Elizabeth (Bennett) Hathaway, 22 Jul 1790 - 11 Aug 1878. They are buried at Powers Cemetery, Steuben County, Indiana. (Dates for the Hathaways vary in History per the Cemetery Book. Henry married his 2nd wife on 22 May 1882, Amelia (Freygang) Carpenter Hathaway, born in 1850, widow of James M. Carpenter, daughter of Charles Julius Freygang who died 07 Aug 1868, and Frederika (Weicht) Freygang Barr, who died 04 Mar 1891. Charles and Frederika are buried at Old Angola Cemetery, Angola, Steuben County, Indiana. CHILDREN OF THE 1ST MARRIAGE: Joseph M. Hathaway, 23 Apr 1846 - 14 Mar 1921, married Melissa A, (Fox) Hathaway, 21 Feb 1848 - 03 Nov 1919. They are buried at York Cemetery. Esther R. (Hathaway) Johnson married Amos C. Johnson, no other information. Sarah E. (Hathaway) Sowle, on 20 Aug 1866, married Dwight P. Sowle, 04 Apr 1836 - 06 May 1899. Dwight is buried at Lakeside Cemetery, Steuben County, Indiana. He is listed as P. Sowle in the Cemetery Book. Dwight was the son of Adam W. A. Sowle, 20 Jan 1806 - 18 Oct 1877, and Experience (Whaley) Sowle, 16 May 1809 - 06 Jan 1899. They are buried at Circle Hill Cemetery, Angola, Steuben County, Indiana. Emma L. (Hathaway) Gillis married John Gillis on 09 Oct 1878. No other information. David Park Hathaway, 22 Jul 1842 - 09 Jul 1943, on 20 Mar 1893, married Mollie (Miller) Hathaway. He is buried at Circle Hill Cemetery, Legion Lot. "Military slab of David P., Pvt., Co. H., 157th Ind. Inf., Spanish American War." William Henry Hathaway, 1855 - 1932, on 27 Jan 1880, married Isabell/Bell M. (Gillies) Hathaway, 1857 - 1928. They are buried at Circle Hill Cemetery.
