STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 19, 1901, page 1, column 5 MARY (KANKAMP) HENWOOD, 04 May 1838 - 11 Jun 1901 Mary Kankamp Henwood was born in Bremen, Germany, May 4, 1838, and died at her home in Angola, Ind., June 11, 1901, aged 63 years, 1 month and 11 (possibly 7 ?) days. She came to this country with her parents when a child eight years old. She was married to Peter Henwood, April 29, 1860, and to this union five children were born. Of these, Frank and Lola died many years ago, while her other children, Mrs. Alta Carpenter and Mrs. Lena Griffin, of New York City, and Ernest Henwood, of Angola, with her husband, survive. Also, tenderly related to her, were two stepchildren, Dr. George T. Henwood, of Palouse City, Wash., and Mrs. C. N. Buckland, of Washington, D.C. The latter, on account of sickness, and the former by reason of the great distance, were unable to attend the funeral. Mrs. Buckland had but recently spent several weeks ministering to Mrs. Henwood in her affliction. Mrs. Henwood was a devout and sincere christian woman, and while in health was active in every way for the good of her community and the work of the church. During her long illness of nearly six years, she bore her misfortunes and sufferings heroically and with true christian submission, and was sustained and cheered in this long struggle with death by her children and a host of friends who did everything for her comfort and relief that human skill and loving kindness could suggest. The life and work of this kind-hearted christian woman will not be forgotten, but will be treasured in loving remembrance by all who knew her. The funeral service took place at the Christian church last Thursday afternoon, and was conducted by Elder C. S. Medbury, and the large number of people assembled to pay a last tribute of respect to the deceased, testified to the place she held in the hearts of the people. Her sons-in-law, R. E. Carpenter and E. O. Griffin, of New York City, were also in attendance at the funeral.
