STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, 25 NOV 1891, p. 8, c.2 VELORUS HORTON, 22 Sep 1824 - 20 Nov 1891 Velorus Horton died in Orland, November 20, aged 57 years, 1 month and 28 days. He was born in Holbrook, Conn., and when he was two years old his parents moved to New York. In 1845, he came to Orland, which has since been his home. January 1, 1850, he was married to Louisa Cutler. To them were born three daughters, all of whom preceded him to the better land. Mr. Horton had been a great sufferer for a long time, but his last days were peaceful. On Tuesday he went to sleep and remained so till Friday, when he expired. He was a member of the M. E. church and his funeral took place on Sunday, conducted by his pastor, Rev. Turk. Services at the other churches were given up and all went to pay the last tribute of respect to one of Orland's old settlers. They are buried at Memorial Grove Cemetery, Steuben County, IN. Louisa was the daughter of John Hudson Cutler, born 14 Mar 1804 in Wrentham, MASS, died 30 Aug 1887 in Orland, Steuben County, IN, and Lucy (Dudley) Dudley Conger Cutler, born about 1805 in Sterling, MASS, died 28 Aug 1840. They are buried at Greenlawn Cemetery, Orland, Steuben County, IN. After Lucy's death, John married Phoebe (Randall) Drake Cutler Schneider, 1824 - 04 Aug 1920, widow of Christian Frederic Schneider, 17 Nov 1818 - 30 Nov 1908. They are buried at Greenlawn Cemetery. Phoebe was Christian's 4th wife whom he married on 12 Feb 1890. He was the postmaster at Orland for 37 consecutive years. THREE DAUGHTERS WERE BORN TO THE MARRIAGE OF VELORUS AND LOUISA: DGTR; Orra Elmyra (Horton) Immel, 12 Nov 1850 - 30 Aug 1884, in 1882, married Adam Immel, 1850 - 1900, son of John and Catherine (Fioust) Immel. I could find no record of their marriage in the "Marriages of Steuben County, IN, 1837 - 1899. DGTR: Edna Marion (Horton) Immel, 11 Jan 1855 - 22 Feb 1881. Died age 26 years, 1 month and 11 days. She married Adam Immel, also. Both of these Horton girls died at Geneva, Nebraska and were shipped back to Orland for burial in the Memorial Grove Cemetery. They are on the Horton-Cutler lot. It looks like Edna was Adam's 1st wife. She died in 1881 and in 1882 he married Orra who died in 1884. After she died he married Emily Hoopingardner, born 13 Jan 1860 - died Jan 1941. DGTR: Clara Horton, o4 Sep 1858 - 26 Nov 1879. She is buried at Memorial Grove Cemetery. SIBLINGS OF WIFE, LOUISA (CUTLER) HORTON: SELF: Louisa was the oldest child. BROTHER; John A. Cutler, born 14 Aug 1831 in Worcester, Worcester County, MASS. In 1853 he married Mary J. (Lee) Cutler, born about 1832 in Tamarack, IN. SISTER: Amanda M. (Cutler) Graham, born 12 Feb 1833 in Worcester, Worcester County, MASS, no date of death. On 16 Aug 1855 she married William Graham, born 13 Mar 1830 in Perry, Geauga County, OHIO. No date of death of place of burial. William Graham was the son of Joseph T. Graham, born about 1802, died in 1868 in Sturgis, MI.
